Thanks Kokua, You mixing formula is great, I did my glosscoat 5 hours ago, now 99.5% of the area is tack free, but in some spots the resin is still wet. What should I do? Mix another small batch to paste/cover the uncure resin? Should I wait for few days before sanding the board? Regards, Crabie
Howzit Crabie, Try letting it dry for another day. I’m not sure how long you’ve been making boards and this is a basic part of resin mixing. When catalysing resin make sure you mix the cat. in good and make sure you run your mixing stick around the inner edge of the container. Also if you do some rebrushing just before it kicks you can get streaks that don’t kick as fast. Like I said try letting it dry for another day,It’ll kick eventually. Aloha, Kokua
…Kokua is right on the money here!Mix it well, besides using a painters stick,I have several sizes in wire cooking whips that I use regularly.Herb
Thanks Kokua and Herb, I used to build surfboard, skimboard & kiteboard with epoxy resin, I never have experience in using poly resin. This is my first time making it successfully. And I used to mix the s.a and styrene together with the resin, use a chopstick to stir it well for 3-4 minutes, then add the cat into it and stir it for another 3-4 minutes, just like the instruction you and Herb told. Yup I did paint a lot of artwork on my board, that’s why I worry the fast kick could ruin the artwork (posca pen graphic). I was so excited to see the wax raising up. An hour later when I saw there 're few shining spots, I knew that there might be something wrong. Regards, Crabie
Howzit Crabie, quick drying gloss resin won’t affect you Posca art work, if any thing a slow mix might do more damage since it’s the styrene in the resin that affects the posca paint. I would like to add that Cleanlines I believe is the one who gave us the tip about adding the S.A. to the mixture. Glossing has always been one of my strong points but the S.A. tip took my glossing from A to A+. Aloha, Kokua
Howzit Kokua, …Since I been using Sylmar gloss(like the last 10 years),I mix sanding resin 30/70 gloss, with styrene, and in most cases a little more sa,because I use sand resin in the mix, I’m already uping the sa.You are most likely correct on who gave the tip? This subject in the last 3 years or so has popped up so many times I don’t remember it all anymore. …Had a interesting conversation with Clyde over at Edgefins last week. They were very helpful.Have a good one.Herb
Howzit Herb, Clydes a really good guy and so is his brother John. John was the one who did most of the technical work on their fin system. John is Hamiltons glasser and Clyde is the sander/rub out man. Clyde placed 4th in the masters division of the 25th annual Pinetrees Longboard classic we held 1 1/2 weeks ago.Aloha, Kokua
…Clyde and I were e-mailing back and forth just before he left for the Pinetrees contest.I received a set of Edge tri-fins,and boxes from Brian Barr @ Dingleberries on a trade for some Superchargers.I was e-mailing Clyde about the Edgefins, and decided that I didn’t need a center fin that swiveled, instead I’m going to use the Edge side fins with a Red-X Center box/fin,so I have a front to back positioning center w/ the Edge fins for sides, giving me a changable toein there. He liked, and recommended that idea.Clyde also like my idea of scribing/scoring the foam just under the glass around the box holes(actually Tom@Daum’s idea really). …Tell Clyde CONGRATS on his victory, and thankyou for all his help and information he has given me.Herb
