Guys - I have a Gordon & Smith shop board circa '65 or so. It’s in pretty great shape except for a ding here and there etc. Does anybody know a good place that does restorations? I don’t want to trust it to just any repair guy. Thanks for the help.
Hey “Restore” is not a very clear explanation of what you want done. First of all, it’s not possible, without losing shape, to reglass (like strip off old glass, and redo). Any board repair person can sand the whole board, and regloss, after making sure the dings are repaired correctly. The question becomes…WHY? With the dings repaired correctly, you can go surf it, but it surfs just like a mid 60’s longboard. Believe me, longboards have progressed TONS since those days. Then, surfing an older board with that old, brittle glass job can be very hard on it, and stress fractures leading to more, can be in that board’s future. But it’s your to play with, so have fun, think about it, and consider that it’s a semi relic.
Aaron, Maybe give it a try yourself? You be suprised at how little you need (tools). And by your description of the board, it does not sound like there is that much wrong with it. You could probably get that thing back in pretty good shape for well under 100.00 bucks. Take a couple of hours to look around here before you hand it off to someone els. Punch “restoring” into the search. The beauty of fiberglass is that it is very forgiving - you can pretty much fix most screwups. As long as you are not hacking chunks of glass away that is, haha. Best, Herb Bean
I’m a repair guy and I do restorations. If it is a few dings and a polish you want done, take it to a repair guy. Most repair guys will be the best at blending the repaired ding to the rest of the board, because they do that sort of thing all the time. I would do as Herb suggests and give it a go yourself. If it does’nt work out then take it to the repair guy.David.
