ok so this is my first time to post on this thing… but anyways im interested in learning to shape but have no idea where to start so if u have any tips for me that would be great
best tip ever: read through the archives
best thing to start searching for is the file “surfboard design and construction”
Checking BB’s on surfing, I read about once a month, someone wants to learn how to make boards.
Most want tutoring, a mentor, and expect a gift of love from an expert.
Reality… read up as posted, spend the money for materials, make your first board, your second, and keep going. You learn by doing, and no one is gonna help a newbie.
So…help yourself!
Lee, whats up with being so harsh all the time i sure someone helped u out along the way everyone of us needs help from time to time isnt that what swaylocks is all about? yeah some of the stuff u say is true but you dont have to be so harsh, And when is someone not a ‘‘newbie’’ does that mean that someone will help them when there not.I have a mentor and is taking my shaping to a whole new level just to have someone there to push you a long. To the Guy wanting to learn to shape just read all the post on here then go look at some boards at a shop then just go for it. Dont worry about some old dude thats just pissed off beacuse hes getting old and cant see well enough to see the young group of shapers right behind him ready to take over the world of shaping. If he doesnt want to help us then let him get run over.
Wardo, life is harsh.
Reality is just as harsh.
Get over yourself.
2 surf,
Try watching the Carpenter shaping 101 tape. That’s a great place to start followed by Mr. Phillips’s Damascus video on shaping. If you can find a shaper or someone that has a few shapes to explain that will help. A mentor is ideal, but not always realistic. Read the archives as mentioned above. Don’t get turned off by LeeD’s style of giving information or advice. LeeD is full of good tips and advice, as well as, many others. Some of my best teachers have been blunt, nasty old SOB’s. Make your own board. If I can so can you. You’ll never be more stoked. Mike
Hey, i was in your position about 9 months ago. Up until then i hadnt doen anything. Me and a friend got into it. If you have someone else that wants to do it i think its a better learning experience. at least for me. glassing a board is way easier with two people, but even if that doesnt hold true for other people, having another guy to talk things over with and discuss other aspects is really cool, of course if you dont have that, you do have swaylocks and alot of people on here have soo much information and are really friendly. My advice, research it on here and any other sites you can find, ask questions, and when you’ve done more than you think you need…do a little more, and then lay out money for everything and just go for it. Shaping 101 is a really good video as is glassing 101. But nothing beats experience, even if your first board turns out crappy, it’ll still be a learning thing and you’ll probably still be able to ride it, nothing better than riding your own boards, pm me if you have any other questions
I would buy the shaping 101 video and glassing 101 too. they help a lot…Or find a real shaper in the neighborhood.
DO IT DO IT DO IT TO DEATH>>>SYLVESTER STONE KDIA 1965 !(^%… i wanted to shape too…ambrose… cut out two today, three last week there they are waiting for me…how bout $33.00 an hour to start you watching me shape em and I’ll ta;k while Im shaping… your house or mine? your house ,plus transportation and travel time.my house call before coming
Hi
Go for it. If you get stuck, stop, post the question you have and the guys will be quick to help out or point you in the right direction. You have come to the right place to learn. My first shape was OK it was badly glassed the fins were wrong but it was still the best board in the neighborhood cause I made it myself. I surfed that board for 3 years till it got stolen. What an honour that someone thought it was good enough to steal. I am on board #40 or so and I still have question.
So go for it and stay close to swaylocks and learn
Keep well
for “wardo”:
this is a knowledge forum, not a smart ass forum.
if you want to make personal comments, then email them privately.
by the way, this is the sound of a mentor:
“hey, kid. sweep out the shop and dump the trash and maybe i’ll let you skin a blank or two”.
Gotta go with the “just do it” folks…the videos are great and this site has a wealth of info but…Buy a blank or strip the glass off a beater long board, buy a surform and some sandpaper and go at it. Once you get a feel for foam and the tools and start thinking 3 dimensionally, all the info on this site and the videos will mean a whole lot more to you.
Most people here started with a couple of sawhorses and a surform…so can you! Have fun with it! (it’s not rocket science, really).
Hey wanna shape,
Welcome to swaylock’s.
www.surfersteve.com and of course here was a real good first entry into shaping for me. Then, like suggested earlier, the Carper videos put good visuals to what I was reading. I’m kind of analytical and went about this route before my first board. Seems others can jump right in, start mowing foam, ask questions during the process, and come out with a pretty stunning board. While still others may pick route that something in between?? Have you done your own repairs in the past? That’s a pretty good primer is so.
Hope your recovery is going well - get back back in the water soon!
Best,
Herb B
