I surfed Munich!

…Well, sort of…I ate it a dozen times in Munich!

Surfing this still wave is really diffrent from surfing a real wave, in fact, i don’t know if this can really be called surfing. There are two ways to drop into this wave, the first way is to sit down on the edge where everyone is standing, put the board on the water, get your feet placing right , then just stand up and try not to die. the other way is to just jump on your board like a skateboard. after about ten times of totally eating the river bed (and you do), i figured out that when you drop in, you basically want to grind the white wash untill you get in the center of the wave, then you can drop down in the face and people basically tack back and fourth untill they go for a gnarly three foot air and eat it. I tried turning a couple of them on to Sways, but I don’t know if they bit.

Here is me in the line up (2nd to last) with the other goofies.

(if you are regular, you typically drop into the wave on the other side of the river)

I got pretty good at fallilng in the water…

Hey Rhino,

Welcome home and cool photos. You worried our French friend Balsa. Glad your ok. Mike

Looks super fun! Lots of vids on youtube as well.

Were any of the guy riding boards specially designed for the wave?

How was the rest of the trip?

Most of the boards are pretty short and wide. I was talking to some of the orgional still wave surfers who have been surfing there for 15+ years and they said there used to be a few shapers in munich, but now everyone just buys shortboards from the surf shop (there are around 200 people who surf this wave)

the rest of my trip was great, I went to England,France, Luxenbourg, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Itialy, Greece, The Netherlands, and Brussles. Two months with a backpack was a long time and it was pretty good to get back home and surf Cardiff yesterday. I missed out on the south of france and spain, so I will have to go back sometime.

I understand that feeling. It’s amazing how cool it is to have some space to throw your crap around after keeping it all in a back for a few months.

Rhino,

that looks great. I was in Munich backpacking in 1988 and saw that same river spot being surfed back then. Of course I had no board with me so had to be content to just watch for an hour or so. Good to hear from someone on here that has actually surfed it.

Cheers

Rohan

I didnot have a board with me either, but I just had to ask a few people to loan me theirs for a half hour…it was a waterloged beater, but it worked well enough.

sweet, glad you got to ride the river wave in Germany.
