Sorry but its obvious that most of you topguys spend way more time in this forum debating the dryland pros & cons of todays most popular fin sysytems than all the time ever contributed to the hows and whys of the fin
s basic functioning while surfing!! Am I missing the point here? All this shop talk is dehydrating.
If you want the basics to fin design and how they relate to riding waves, there are tons of resources. That has been said and done. Fin templates have been refined to death and what it really comes down to is who can provide those templates in a fin system that is durable, easy to install, and economical. Fin templates and placements are discussed all the time on this page, as well as the pros and cons of various systems. Just check the archives or post a fin question.

The majority of fins I see in the water aren’t anything special. It’s what I’m working on right now. I have my own opinions about which fin mount systems are the best but we’ve all ready and ithashed it out pretty well with FCS at the bottom and Future and RedX close at the top. How we construct things is important. Frankly I think shop talk is important too. The quality of the work we produce has to be a primary focus. One of the beauties of a forum is that if we handle things right we can all agree to disagree and as a result learn something from each other. If another thread of discussion needs to be started regard template/foil/fin performance then just go for it. If somebody wants to talk shop that’s great too. There’s plenty of room for all of us here. Oh, and how about letting us in on a the many reasources of how different fin configurations affect surfboard responce and affect them in different conditions. I’m sure lots of us would be interested in a few of those. Good Surfin’, Rich
I don’t know if any of you have seen his fins – but they are WAY different than anything out there. The leading edge /thickest part of the fin is proportionally way different than any thruster fins today. Paul has made some arguments about the function of the thickness – which I wouldn’t mind hearing again – my question is why aren’t thruster fins fatter?
