…to your garage/shop and said “I learned how to surf almost a year and a half ago on a borrowed 7’10” (which I can’t remember the dimensions of). Once I could catch waves (and became naturally addicted) I wanted to catch more waves. I went out and bought a 9’0" Stewart “Light Speed Performance (LSP)” board. I love that board, but I would like to have something like that 7’10" for myself so I can go to some of the steeper breaks. It was a fun board, square tail, not an egg, decent rocker… I am 5’9" and about 165. What dimensions would you suggest? I rarely surf waves over head high. (SoCal) I am going to shape and maybe glass it myself. I will definately post it in the boards section when it is completed. I also plan on using Herb’s fins on it. Thank you in advance GF

I’m your size, and I would use this shape. It’s 7’10" x 15" x 22.2" x 18" all dressed out, with a 3" square stern. Rocker is 2.91" tail, 4.67" nose. Nose sharpness: Templates each overlap stringer by .6". The deck is 3" glassed, and the rail is a turned down elipse. The rail line is .9" high glassed. The rail is tucked 2.8" glassed. I forgot to say the wide point is offset 3" forward.
Hey Noodle, I gotta say that I dig the way you post the dimensions in that X,Y, Rocker format. It gave me the exact item I was looking for on a current project for a bro. Thanks, Magoo
No problem.>>> Hey Noodle, I gotta say that I dig the way you post the dimensions in that > X,Y, Rocker format. It gave me the exact item I was looking for on a > current project for a bro. Thanks, Magoo
I lied. The rail is tucked 1.8" glassed, as I intended.>>> I forgot to say the wide point is offset 3" forward.
noodle-- i know i’ve asked you this before. but i still don’t get how to use your number charts. could you walk me through it? i’m super curious as to how you actually utilize your system. thanks, kirk
With this wider tail curve, “V” the tail 1/4" to 1/2" from horizontal maxed 12" from stern. This will allow a healthy drop/turn in juice.
I am going to draw these out and see what looks good. I may end up with a morph of both. I do have one question though, in both of the responses I received, one had the nose wider than the tail and one had the tail wider than the nose. How does that effect the ride?? I would think that it would effect where you stand on the board…wouldn’t it??? I will try to go buy the blank for “our” board this weekend. Which blank should I use??? (ok, maybe two questions…for now) Thank you GF

Well… the measurements are in inches. Since inch measurements shorter than one foot break down in decimals, buy an engineer’s scale. For the outline, get a roll of wide paper. I use brown postage wrap. Tape the paper to a flat surface. Draw a straight line longer than the board, roughly centered down the length of the paper. This will be the center stringer line. Make a mark on one end. That mark will be zero, the board stern. Use a tape measure to measure up the line and make hash marks. Place marks at every “y” measurement within a foot or so of the board ends where the outline will curve a lot. You can mark every three or four inches at mid-board. Use a straight edge and a square to extend the hash marks to the rail lines. With your scale, measure from the stringer line, out each hash line, and place a mark where the rail will intersect it. By now you should be asking “Why didn’t I use crosshatch paper?” If you wanna blow the bucks, back up and use it. Draw a line around the rail outline. See how the outline looks. Adjust it as you like, then cut only the outline of one side of the board. Tape your template to the blank. Draw one rail, flip it and draw the other rail. Lets back up again. You just made an outline which measures the desired length around the rocker. I usually place the desired straight-measured end marks on the blank, then draw the nose and tail outlines from the ends to mid-board, shifting the template between draws. Use another long piece of paper the same way for a rocker template. Instead of cutting the template out of the paper, Get some spray on craft glue. Stick the paper to some 1/4" plywood, and cut an outside template along the board side of the line. Use the same method to make a plywood template for your rail. But here’s how you measure it. Draw an 18" line and put a mark on one end. The mark will be zero, the center stringer line. Mark your hash lines and extend them up and down to the deck and bottom lines. Measure up to the deck, and down to the bottom. Draw deck and bottom lines. Glue the paper outline to a 1/4" plywood back, and cut out the wood from inside the rail template. I like to make three rail templates for each rail. One for deck, one for bottom, and an overall cross section for thickness. After you cut the outline in the blank, draw a few rail line marks down each side, working into any “v” and chines you may want. I shape the mid-board, bottom rail first, then transition it into the board ends. Then I take the deck down. Good luck.

Getting to the heart of ones abilities really helps in designing a good working board. No sense of overkill in bells and whistles that are a long way off in the road to higher advancement. Some take offense at it, but others are very open about their abilities and they get what will work well for them as a result. http://www.JimtheGenius@aol.com

Some take offense at it, but others are very open > about their abilities and they get what will work well for them as a > result. I totally agree. That is why I said only a year and a half. I guess that is still kind of vague. I catch the waves, not too many stylish moves once up but I can do cutbacks and hang 5 on the right wave. I figure once I get the hang of just riding the 7’10" I will be able to start exploring the wave and eventually maybe get some floaters in. I have a long way to go and don’t have a “vision” of doing any tournaments or anything…just have fun.
Wish pro Herb could have responded to the width question. I think a wide tail board is for riding on the tail and skate-turning… to me, for skate-shredding mushy point-type breaks. A 165 lb surfer shredding on a 7-10 board will cause larger turns, but doable. A wide nose board would carve out fast moving hollow beach/reef-type breaks. It would drop off a little steeper wall. You would trim a wall weighted forward on the board. It would float you a little higher. I guess you can tell which school I’m from. If I get some time, I’ll work up the compromise outline, but the rail and rocker should still be good.

I just did a little fun board. 8’x 16 1/2" x 21 1/2" x 14 1/4" x 2 7/8". Wide point 3 inches forward. Squash Tail. I surf FL so we like a little less rocker (flatter=Faster) 4 1/2" nose Rocker/3" tail. I did 1/2" Tail V, started real light about 24" inches up from tail. Did a 2 + 1 fin setup. I have O’fishl on the side bites and cutaway dragging Board is Fun. Good Luck. Also, glassed it with 6/4 on deck and 6 on bottom.
i got it. thanks for the detailed walkthrough. kirk
This outline is 94" x 15" x 22.2" x 17.5" glassed, with 2.5" forward offset. The nose templates each overlap the stringer 0.5". I looked at narrower noses and tails, but this is as narrow as I think works. The problem is the 22.2" width, combined with a 7-10 length. Those lines just have to curve some. x outline 0 , 0.00 0 , 1.50 0.5 , 2.38 1 , 2.92 2 , 3.71 3 , 4.32 4 , 4.83 5 , 5.28 6 , 5.67 7 , 6.03 8 , 6.36 9 , 6.66 10 , 6.94 11 , 7.20 12 , 7.45 13 , 7.68 14 , 7.90 15 , 8.10 16 , 8.30 17 , 8.48 18 , 8.66 19 , 8.82 20 , 8.98 21 , 9.13 22 , 9.27 23 , 9.40 24 , 9.53 25 , 9.65 26 , 9.77 27 , 9.88 28 , 9.98 29 , 10.07 30 , 10.17 31 , 10.25 32 , 10.33 33 , 10.41 34 , 10.48 35 , 10.55 36 , 10.61 37 , 10.66 38 , 10.72 39 , 10.76 40 , 10.81 41 , 10.85 42 , 10.88 43 , 10.91 44 , 10.94 45 , 10.96 46 , 10.97 47 , 10.99 48 , 11.00 49 , 11.00 50 , 11.00 51 , 11.00 52 , 11.00 53 , 11.00 54 , 11.00 55 , 10.99 56 , 10.99 57 , 10.98 58 , 10.97 59 , 10.96 60 , 10.95 61 , 10.93 62 , 10.91 63 , 10.88 64 , 10.85 65 , 10.81 66 , 10.77 67 , 10.72 68 , 10.66 69 , 10.60 70 , 10.53 71 , 10.45 72 , 10.35 73 , 10.25 74 , 10.14 75 , 10.02 76 , 9.88 77 , 9.73 78 , 9.56 79 , 9.37 80 , 9.17 81 , 8.95 82 , 8.70 83 , 8.43 84 , 8.13 85 , 7.80 86 , 7.43 87 , 7.02 88 , 6.55 89 , 6.03 90 , 5.42 91 , 4.70 92 , 3.81 93 , 2.60 93.5 , 1.74 94 , 0.00
