Be careful what you buy in the way of foreign lumber; You may have Eric Holder show up at your door with Dept. of Fish and Game Agents. M-16's and bullet proof vests. At which time they will confiscate your Rosewood and Ebony. Much like they recently did Gibson Guitar. All that beautiful wood that you intended for tailblocks and wooden fins will have to be litigated before it's returned.
It could be a job for uncle Omar. You have to wonder what the hell happened. I have been scouting the trash heaps for years, and in the process, stored up great tail block material. Old growth redwood makes the best tail blocks. I enjoy telling people that that tail block has 1000 year old redwood in it.
Back in the early seventies, a contractor put in a super low bid to tear down the old bridge in Newport at PCH, that separated the back bay from the main channel, by the Rueben E Lee. Everyone thought he was crazy, but they still awarded him the contract. He knew under the creosote was old growth, and in perfect condition. I learned an important lesson from him, and he resold the wood for a million dollars. One man’s trash…
My guess is the guys at Fender made an anonymous call…
On my boards I use very small bits of koa for nose and tail blocks. They have a bit of history. I was working for a a self proclaimed “kunstmueblewerker,” an art funiture maker. We were doing some projects for Neil Young. I kept the scraps. So my boards have a bit of Hawaii and a bit of Neil Young’s house in them.
That “imbuya” on the squid??? Hmmmmm…Origins unknown. Hope the Feds don’t come and confiscate that board!
I restore antique furniture and have a great stash of old wood. Most of it is virgin growth that was basically gone by the mid 1800’s. A great source for wood is beat up old tables…I can buy early 19th century drop leaf tables for around $50 a pop. They will have wide boards anywhere from 16" to 30" and around 4 feet long.
A lot of this wood is gone.Santo Domingo Mahogany,Virgin Cherry and walnut… and curly maple,Chestnut etc… Furniture makers got the best stuff so it pays to check junk shops and auctions.
I also have a good stash of old growth redwood which came from the Sandblasted Signs made in the 70’s and 80’s before the wood became impossible to get. I just bought an old sign that is 16 feet long and 30" wide by 2 3/4" inches thick. The boards used to make it are clear heart old growth redwood. Arghhh!
Not bragging…just cluing you guys in as to what to look for. Brucker
When Honda started importing motorcycles, up into the late 70’s they shipped the bikes mounted to teak pallets …“sure, take as many as you want, we’re just gonna have to pay for their disposal anyway”…lot of furniture got made from those pallets…
I heard the story on talk radio. Listened to an interview.....a total raid of one company that makes a product...and no raid of the competors that import wood from the same sources......maybe it's a union vs non union thing.....I did a search...I'm going to post a link but I cannot back the source of the link...do your own homework.
The whole thing makes me sick. How do we "create" jobs if we have this stuff going on???? Read the fine print...if you own a guitar with imported woods....Big Brother might want to talk to you.......If you own a "company" you already deal with this stuff.......
hey mc ding
dont tell me ya got the same lunatics running the show over there as here. god help us?
** cheers huie
**
We have our own lunatics thank you.
No Huie. Your Nation is much freer than ours. We imported our lunatics fron Stalinist Russia after WW II. It's called "purge your enemies". I've got a daughter who lives in "the land of the long white cloud". I told her to stay there . She's better off. Respect to you Huie.
Ghetto’s story about the guy that got the bid to tear the bridge in order to get the wood was still in my head this morning when I walked by a sailboat that has washed up on the beach. It had teak decks. I was thinking someone should come by and pry that stuff up. Teak is some pricey stuff.
We used to do the occasional remodel of a condo at Maalaea on Maui when I was living there. Teak or Koa cabinets to the landfill. I at the time had no place to store or process. By the way I think it was Martin who drooped the dime on Gibson. Just a rumor though. Remember I talk out my a$$ most of the time.
I am sure Gibson got busted because they filled out the proper forms and aplications for importing their wood. I got busted in 1999 when I tried to bring in a little wood from Vietnam My few hundered dollars of wood was confiscated at the Honolulu Airport and I never saw it again. I had proof of purchase but didn't have the proper forms . Never worried much about importing wood because the lumber brokers take care of the documentation. Gibson is probably their own buyer and broker. But this thread did get me interested in what is going on so I checked the Lacy Act. And it is being updated and steps taken for enforcement. I was shocked at the updates. The things that are being covered under the updates are insain !! Basicly anyone who has anything made from imported wood. (walking stick, knife handle, hammer handle,) just about everything made of wood, has the burden to prove when and where that object came from and if you cant then you are in violation of the law and can be taken off to jail. The new Lacy Act really, really scares me !!!! I have never been a good record keeper and don't have any paper work for any of the wood in my shop !!!! I am sure they could arrest me and put me in jail for 99 years. It scares me a lot because the government is starting to go after people for just about anything. Even the local government, they are useing these violations as a means of getting money for the general fund. So I am posting a wood building thread right now and may very well take it down or the very least never post another wood building thread. Seems is if the government is way out of line and by posting on a public forum they may verywell be watching ! At one time I was willing to die for my country and now I may have to be willing to die to protect me from my country.
Just make a contribution to the DNC and the "messiah". You'll be fine Woody. Need an envelope? I've got extras.
And remember; like Steve Earle said; "The DEA's got choppers in the air."
Habeas corpus? WTF! Thats the scariest part. I’m less sure of the political part of this than the runaway bureaucracy. This is an attack on the Constitution by faceless bureaucrats and I’m reading about it on a surfboard chat site!
Wake up America! Wait until they start coming after our light bulb…er…nevermind.
It's a little further off topic; but some of us have actually used Old Dominion or Estes to ship blanks, boards etc. Old Dominion recently took a driver from behind the wheel and reassigned him to a dockside job because he's a notorious alcoholic/drunk. This action is required by the DOT, Dept. Of Transportation. The EOC Economic Opportinity Commission then filed suit against Old Dominion for violation of the ADA Americans with Disabilites Act. Requiring that he be reinstated as a driver. You guys probably think I make this $#!t up. Yeah Right.

Thank you Lee....
The standard light bulb will be outlawed at the end of the year. I think we will be able to bootleg them from Texas....What's more toxic? Standard light bulb or florescent.....you decide. Give me a Standard...thank you.
Because I went to public school in California I'm not very good at spelling. I had to look up "Florescent"......comes from the word florescence....a flower, a blooming or flowering,,,what a nice word for such a toxic subject.....
Light bulbs are an awesome invention...think about life without light bulbs....Thank god a teacher taught me how to use a Dictionary....
Everything I know about money I learned from my Mother and Father. We learned nothing about how to manage money in school. My house is made of wood. I have no idea where the wood came from. I'm screwed when the Lacey Act people want to see my papers.....
and my wall unit, and the bed, and the desk, the kitchen table, my daughters bed, my surfboards, the stair railing, the fence, and all that cool wood veneer I got from Ken and Resinhead and Surf4fins.........gone...think about it...

I believe you meant "Fluorescence." Doesn't have much to do with flowers and blooming, but it does make good lighting for shaping surfboards.
Wake up pal...it's not about the spelling....
I found this link on a Swaylock's add

Let's do everything we can to keep these guitar builders at home in the USA.
I can go on a rant. Read the first post, read the links, listen to skilled woodworkers like WoodOgre. Why do we chase away good business with crazy laws?.....a la la la a la la la a la aaaaaaaaa..............be mellow......oh boy............
