indoor uv lightbulbs - the never ending struggle

Hey guys,

Talked to the guys at fiberglass hawaii and was told that these lights are the ones they sell. http://www.marineandreef.com/Super_Actinic_Lamps_48_inch_URI_p/rur81348.htm  I did a test cup of resin with Solarez as well as simlar 249A… The solarez did not cure after 30 min, the simlar started to gel (a little bit). After 7 hours the bottom of the simlar cup was hardened but the top was tackey.

My question is what lights do i get to cure 100% indoor?! Been talking with solarez and FH, still waiting for answeres. Solarez mentioned that their resin is meant to cure in UV-A light which is a different spectrum from what I am using (explains that)… Does anybody have any ideas to what light to get? My current glassing bay has 5 48" twin bulb fixtures, so there is the opporunity for pleanty of light.

Hi,

I’m a simple user of pre-activated UV resin for dings repairs but I saw several shapers using UV tubes to get both advantages of indoor shping and UV cure…

The “good light” seems to be UV-A rays radiation.(UV-A wavelength:315nm-400nm) (cf.http://www.resinlaminates.com/faq.asp).

Apparently, you can find good ones such 100 watt tubes on solar-tan supplies store (http://suncure.com/UVC2000usersguide.html), or other kind of lights (hight pressure UVA-lamp): http://www.homesolariums.com.au/Ultra_Violet_Tubes.

I don’t know where u live but I think u’ll manage to find a tanning-salon closeby or online.

Good Luck !

so your thinking 5 or so 4’ UVA lights should do the trick? I know it will work for the solarez but still questioning the simlar i guess, only one way to find out. Emailed the company i get my resin from to see if they have any recomndations.

Cover up whats left in the pot and save for future use.  Waste not–Want not and it’s better for the landfills.   If you are using true UV bulbs;  there is something wrong with the way you have it set up.  Reflective, coverage, amount of UV powder etc.  I used to walk mine outside when I had a glass shop in Calif.  I only used Silmar and never had a problem that wasn’t my fault.  Buy or get for free bulbs from the tanning salon.  They are sized differantly and you will have to build your fixture to fit.  A UV box is the best solution.  Also works to cure Epoxy.  Plywood box on saw horses.  Lined with quilted foil.

I run a Fulham sun horse ballast ( $50) powers 4 - 6’ bulbs. I get my bulbs from the tanning salon…free. if you happen to be in or around central Florida I have xtras you can have.

okay great thanks alot for the help. Just ordered some balasts from surf source, and calling up the local tanning shops. Dbslim, i would totally take you up on that offer but im in New Jersey. There has to be some around here that are trying to get rid of them… do they replace them when theyre getting old or somthing?

is that ballast your running for all 4 lamps?

as for my whoopsies i was told about the wrong light, which is odd since it was from a reputable source. So returning those asap…

But thanks alot for the help guys, everything else should just be wiring up the lights in a few days.

Coverage of light is key.

I saw a set-up for sale somewhere that was basically a wave shaped system.

Like a “C” shaped setup.

Multiple 8" bulbs.

Board was on a rolling rack that wheeled into the light system.

No need for flipping board.

I just use the sun.

But I work in sunny California.

Yes the ballast powers all 4 bulbs, got it on Amazon. Did some research and the sun horse came highly recommend for this application. And yes the reputable tanning salons change the bulbs after so many hours. They still have plenty of life left. Good luck with your setup.

Found alot of tanning canopys over the years.  Ebay usually.  Some of them were pretty cheap.  For some reason the good deals are always on the East Coast.  The canopys are on wheels and fold vertical for storage.  But the least exspensive route is as Dslim stated.  Lowel

here is a site that a contract glasser uses i found, Didnt specify what bulb, said they usa UV-B light, but said that any will work in the glassing process. Does anybody disagree?

on the bright side “Extremely dark, golden and sexy tans are just 20 minutes away when you upgrade to Pro Reflector tanning lamps.”

Since all will work as stated by the guy i talked to. . assuming i should be looking for a high UV-B number? for maximum tan…

http://www.tanninglamps4less.com/proplus.html   like this one…

DBSlim, good call on amazon, picked up the ballsat for 60 bucks, compared to 90 on here.

Probably going to do a bent stainless “c” shaped shroud i can hang over glassing racks. (pull it up for  glassing drop it down for curing)

Thinking about getting these, comments?

after looking this bulb is high in uv-b while also producing uv-a, getting a F73 (73 inch/) at 100w t12 diamater… running off the sunhourse ballast.

finished!

welded aluminum frame
used flourecent light covers as a shroud… faced with tin foil and tape.
sunhorse ballast
4 blulbs

mounted on a pully, to lift and drop while glassing and curing.

thanks alot guys for the help!

Good stuff hansel.

Very similar to what i described above.

The one I saw was enlosed behind the bulbs.

So not to let any light out the back.

Something reflective like a foil maybe?

thanks, yeah i used the plastic pannels and spray adhesived foil to the backs.

works pretty well to my suprise
