Info on an old Harbour

Any ideas on approximate year this board was built? Not sure the pictures do it justice, but it’s a beauty. Stringer and tail block alternate a reddish wood and balsa. Rail laps are flawless. I know Rich occasionally hangs out here and there are a lot of people knowledgable with his boards. I picked in up in VA in the late 80’s when I was in college there. Did Harbour have a factory out there in the 60’s or was it definately made in the Seal Beach area?

The board is a 9’9" around 22" wide and weighs about 30-35lbs. Nothing written on the stringer - unless it’s under the black opaque band. Couple more pics. I used to ride it some. Lots of fun but the crowds are too thick these days in SD and it’s not exactly a travel board.

My guess would be somewhere between 1963 to 1966. Competition stripe, D fin, cut lap that would be the era.

Hey Stinky,

Go to www.harboursurfshop.com Rich might be able to help you,and he’d be the only one to I.D. it properly.Tell em Herb sent you.He also has a discussion board on his site as well.I believe Harbour and Bruce Jones were the first in this industry to have discussion boards on there sites approx. 2 or 3 years before sways exisisted.Herb

Hey Stink:

I agree with Herb on what to do, but I would say that this board is at the oldest 1964. Look

carefully on both sides of the board along the stringer for a small four or five digit number. Rich still has records

(now computerized) of most of the early boards sold out of the shop. All production in the 60’s came

out of Seal Beach. I have a Trestle Special from '64 and it is way more sophisticated in design than yours.

I just wish it was as flawless as yours!!! Do try to get in touch with Rich. He is retired (mostly) now but always willing to help out. One of our great shaper assets. Do a search here and PM him and he should reply. Best luck!!!

Thanks everyone. I was thinking the fin shape might be the best clue on dating it. Don’t see too many of those with FCS tabs. I’ll see what I can find out over at the Harbour site.

Look at the area between Seal Beach on the center triangle. This is where the serial number might be. If the black band is an after market, then the number may have been below the triangle and covered by the band. If you find the number, go to our web site and click COOL STUFF/Board Search/and enter in the board number. There are a few that we did not have hard copies when we made the database, but most from that era are there. Good luck!

The board is most likely 64-65.

Hey Stinkie:

See what I mean!!! I just think that is the coolest, to get the inside scoop

from a master that was shaping that board over 40 years ago, and still remembers

were he put the numbers!!!

I did find the serial number last night after the the reply from surfteach suggesting look on both sides of the board. It was on the deck. After seeing it I remembered seeing it before, many years ago. Thanks everyone. The Board search tool was really cool. Thanks for making that available Rich. It turned out to be a '66 by the way.
