Info on old Channin twin fin

I scored this beauty on craigslist a few hours ago. There are no markings other than the # 7426. Does anybody know who where and when this was shaped? Thanks in advance for any info.

no idea who, but I rode a lot of channins that looked a lot like that in the early/mid 80s.  Not much of a historian but that’s my ballpark guess.

Nice find, looks like a fun ride.

Wow, that’s a trip back in the time machine - I did that paint job.

By the style of the Channin logo, it must of been around the time I started working there - circa Spring of 1983 to about the Summer of '84 when the logo was updated.

It was most likely shaped by Bill Minard.

It was built at the Channin factory on Westlake Dr. in Encintas CA, which is now Bing Surfboards.

Nice work.

I would have guessed mid 80s, judging by the shape and color work.

I believe you also airbrushed three Eberlys that I have?

This place is amazing.

Your paint job is the main reason I had to have this board when I saw it. Great work and thanks a ton for the info. The guy I bought it from said he bought it new from a surf shop in Miami in 1977 but I knew it wasnt that old.

accordng to stoked n board, channin boards normally put the two-digit year after the serial number.  i have a 6’10" channin stinger from 1977 i picked up for $100 that has a really nice vintage fin.  haven’t gotten around to the minor repairs it needs yet, but i look forward to riding it.

Nice work atomizer,

Nice looking Channin sting.  Nice find for $100.00 are you planning to ride it?

i’m definitely going to ride it.  it just needs some repairs to the points of the tail and a couple of other minor dings fixed before i put it in the water.  it had very little use and has hardly any pressure dents.  the dings are from being carelessly moved around in storage.  it does have significant yellowing (sun damage) on the deck, but it doesn’t look too bad.  i took some 300 grit and wet sanded part of the deck to remove some of the oxidized hotcoat and it did lighten it up a bit.  overall its in pretty good shape for being 36 years old.  i figured for $100 i couldn’t go wrong, even if i hate riding it, as the fin that came with it is probably worth $50 alone.  the fin is red and white and appropriate for the vintage, so i assume it is original.  i’ve been wanting a vintage G&S stinger, but this will have to do for now.

Bookkeeping was pretty lax at Channin for the most part.  Board number schemes varied from sequential to a number with a date, or just a made up number. By the time I left Channin in 2001 the system was the date and the number of what board got shaped that day. For example the third board shaped on 7/15/1999 would be 715993.
