Wondering if anyone can tell me more about an old Hobie longboard that’s been in my family for many years. I’m hoping to figure out when the board was made and if possible, who shaped it. My uncle picked this board up at yard sale in Northern Virginia back in the mid 70s. It’s a 9’5 with two Hobie decals on the deck (see pictures). The serial number is 12775. I’m not trying to sell the board but I would be interested in hearing thoughts on the board’s value. It is in near mint condition.
Thanks!!!
Very nice find.
Al I can say is by the
Fin
And by that balsa, oh wow
60’s
It is worth what someone will pay for it.
Very nice condition.
Looks like stock shape.
My first guess was well kept Studio prop.
Fin is made from Sapele wood which is a type of Mahogany. Beautiful board.
Cucumber,
Your fin may be an example of the Plexiglass Bead, that was used by Hobie, for a short time in the mid '60’s. The plexi bead was brittle, and was prone to shatters. Few, if any, survive in prestine condition.
Classic Barn find. Maybe its an awesome shape. Maybe its a dog. Lets put together a crew of 20 California surfers to ride your pig/dog and put it to the test…ha ha…great old boards are always thrashed…the clean ones belonged to people that did not surf or the board did not work…it’s all good…value? at least 1500…
1963-64 from the looks of it. Mighty nice condition, too. I doubt you’ll ever know who shaped it, though. Hobie had all manner of guys mowing foam back then. Even Velzy used to ghost for him to make some under the table cash when the IRS was up his butt.
