I am about to start with my 2 new boards and I was planning on adding some colour this time around. I really like those inlay designs. I now you can achieve this look via fabric inlay, but I think those were done differently.
My guess (and plan, so please stop me if this is prone to desaster!):
As I am usung EPS, either sand really really fine or tape off and seal desired area
Either mix resin with pigments or use acrylic colour
My beginner attempts show me that epoxy resin and acrylic paint will bleed uder tape lines if the surface of the board below the tape is not smooth and sealed. It takes longer for ‘wetter’ acrylics and epoxy resin to set so they have more time to seep. It’s happened to me: 1) acrylics airbrushed ‘wet’ over tape on spackeld EPS, 2) acrylics brushed ‘wet’ over tape on painted & spackled EPS, 3) taped epoxy resin pinline covering edge of fabric inlay. Best results so far have been airbrushing with acrylics ‘dry’ so as not to pile up wet paint on the tape line. On the epoxy pinline I will try ‘basting’ both side of the cutlap with clear resin first before taping.
Thanks J. I already had a look at that thread and also on that excellent test that GregTate ran. From his findings I’d have chosen to stain the foam with acrylic based on the look of the colours.
I did some test batches. I am using just regular acrylic paint. Pure.
Acrylic spreaded directly on foam.
Epoxy on foam. Acrylic on epoxy.
Epoxy/Qcell on foam. Acrylix on that.
-> just acrylic on foam offered best adhesion, epoxy sealed foam the worst. Qcell close to first one. So with my board, I’ll just spread directly on the blank.
