input on fin setup for new board

[img_assist|nid=1046975|title=fish|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=0|height=0]hey i am a really new to surfboard shaping i am on board number 2 and I was thinking of trying a twin fin set up on my 2nd board. But the board in a 7ft fish/mini mal   and i do not know if the board is to long for a twin fin set up, i have only seen them on much smaller boards. So i guess i was wanting some advice, ie pro and cons of twins, thruster and or single fin for this board (pic below is before rail and board sand). i wil be glassing timber fins on.

I  have looked at some older threads that help but fresh imput is always great

unfortunately can not help with numbers, but...

if you call a shaper up and ask him they'll likely tell, so choose one you like

i once did that after kendall advised me to do so... called Lost, got a reply! was pretty stoked, calling from europe to usa and just get it...

even mark richard once told me how to stick fins on a 6.6 [by mail]

but, i am sure sb will give you numbers here

What you could consider though, is to make it a Quad, the tail is big ass wide, so unstable, sticking more fins in on such a big board will be more stable than twins only, unless they are huge ass keels or st...

good luck, and post bigger pictures!! [outline, rocker/foil, tail]

Wouter

Quad:

Back fins 5" mark for the back of the fins. 2" in from the rail 1/8" toe. 5 degree cant.

Front fins will be marked at 10" 1 1/4" from the rail 1/4" toe. 7 degree cant.

Small fins in back and the larger fins to the front.

hey some better pics of rocker etc thanks for the imput so far

spec are  7ft , 20 1/8 , 2 5/8  with 4 3/8 nose lift 1 5/8 tail lift

cheers antony

hey TS

is it a wood board?

it looks like a healthy tail flip is built into it.

go out and tape up where the fins go, and draw the pencil lines of the fins–> there where surfding says to put them

look at it from all angles, over and over…

it is true that if it looks good, it usually works good.

race cars look good, and the work good too, it is you eye that will see hydrodynamics evolve

your eye will know where the fins must go.

did you already make the fins? if not, do that first.

maybe hynson has some suggestions for you, dont know us shapers who make similar boards

i am pretty sure the board will fly, and with a quad have some hold

nice

Twin fins on that board would be rad!! I have an old no name board from the mid 60’s that was passed down through a good family friend that is a twin fin, and it is a 7’6" mini mal-ish type of board. I think that if you get the right twin fin template on that board you will have a blast. I generally work in the 9 3/4" to 10 3/4" from tail placement. I know that is a huge spread but you have to take into consideration the tail rocker and shape of board ie. high performance, retro twin, or a cruiser. Wouter has the right idea about using your “eye.” That is always a great way to dial in the fin placement.

Nice work on the shape. I just finished a 7’ Hollow wooden fish and am stoked about my choice to go with 4 fins. If you do go with the quad setup, make sure you do plenty of research on your fin placement and such… lots of great info out there. With a quad you can place the fins where they’re best for your style of ride, not to mention the fin shapes and cant… all can be unique to your board. If I can find the links I referenced I’ll pass them along.
