I have glassed only roughly 15 boards, and have used epoxy each time… BUT here is the deal, I want to get that awesome gloss at the finish and just cannot seem to do it with moving up in sandpaper grit. Would anyone recomend using poly resing gloss over top of epoxy hot coat? thanks in advanced for any advise.
I’m not gonna say I recommend it, but I’ve done it, and didn’t have any adhesion issues. Except when I got a ding, then sometimes the poly would chip off around the ding. Some guys use automotive spray finish, I’ve never tried it. I just hand sand my epoxy boards 600 - 1000 and call it good, I like the “satin” or “eggshell” finish.
For the same resin poly fractures and epoxy dents, epoxy will not shine like a poly glassed board. But you can get close. On some of my epoxy fill coats I have been tempted to leave it unsanded since it turned out so well.
If you do use poly on an epoxy fill coat, sand it to 180 or 220 and then use a very thin poly gloss coat. Very thin. Very thin.
If you go with poly, let epoxy fully cured sand no more than 80grit then coat with poly with low styr p contain. Yes on dings poly possibly spider crack but lam is no leak. I do poly on epoxy on about 100+ boards some really hard use without real problems.
