I have a 6’2" KG fish, Mabile-shaped, that I love. Unfortunately, yesterday I dinged the rail nicely (with my forehead…), and it’s in need of some TLC. I’m a decent ding repairer, but I do know that KG went from resin to epoxy at some point, and I don’t know which my board is.
Hence, my question: how can I figure out whether the board is epoxy or not? The ding is a crack in the glass, so no foam is exposed, so I can’t easily dig a chunk out and see if it melts in resin.
See attached photo if that helps. [img_assist|nid=1053712|title=KG fish|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75]
Epoxy is resin, the question you are asking is"is my board epoxy or polyester?".When you start sanding the area with the ding you should be able to smell it and know if it is poly or epoxy.
Or, are you wondering about the core. EPS(styrofoam) or polyurethane. That’s the more important question. You don’t want to use polyester resin if there is a chance it will come in contact with the EPS core. Epoxy resin you can use on any foam core, EPS or Poly U. Check out the foam. EPS looks and feels like styrofoam. If in doubt, just use epoxy resin. Mike
you should be able to tell by the smell when you start sanding. KG always used PU blanks so I wouldn't worry about melting the foam and even with their epoxy boards, only the lam was done with the epoxy and hotcoast and gloss were done with poly. if you sand it well you should be able to use either type of resin for dings. they also stopped using epoxy after a pretty short period of time.
I think I recall KG offering an EPS option after Clark folded. I could be wrong and it’s probably poly U. But, it’s pretty easy to see the difference. Mike
