Is surf etiquette dead?

Maybe in some settings, but when I have dropped in on others to make a point, it seemed to very quickly crystallize for them why their behavior was unacceptable to begin with, and the drop-ins stopped.  I didn’t do it repeatedly, because I didn’t need to.  Bullies tend back off quickly when they know there will be a price to pay for their rudeness.

Boy, it sure felt good seeing how he handled that. I like to embarrass anybody that drops in. I’ll hoot and holler, yelling things like “whoo hoo”, “yeah man!”, “whoo awesome”, “great wave”. Usually, when everybody else in the lineup is watching the snaker, he gets the point. And since I’m on a longboard and don’t have a problem fixing my own dings, I like to get real close. Sometimes too close. I remember my high school days there were rumors of ‘don’t go to this beach, they’ll yell at you or fight you’. When I finally did surf that beach, I had respect from the get go and realized if you know what you’re doing (ettiquette wise) you’ll be fine.

True - this definitely isn’t an epic wave - but it just brought up the reminder… happens all the time on overhead days at Honolua too - I’ve almost been pushed into the cave a few times… If someone really pisses me off I might grab their leash and yank on it or, if it’s happened multiple times and they’re the asshole of the break, I’ll kick my board out into their asshole - that usually does the trick, but it’s just a shame that more people aren’t made aware of proper ettiquete

Priority means person at the peak gets the wave - a lack of skill doesn’t move priority to the shoulder. IF you are a semi-beginner who can’t handle the steeper part of the wave, then it isn’t a good place for you to surf OR you should be surfing the inside - at this particular break (Breakwall, Lahaina) there’s a shortboard peak where I am, and a smaller inside reform for beginners

Yup - Breakwall… it’s a drop-fest but this is actually about 6am on a fun smaller-medium day so it’s usually before the kooks come out… Definitely not a wave I expect ettiquete on, just brought up the point is all. Unfortunate truth is it happens at Honolua too which is a world-class wave… and it usually isn’t beginners so much as it’s assholes and tourists who think that because they rip surfrider beach they can come here and drop on da boys.

I do like surfing places like Shark Pit, Acid Drops and Kevorkians (left off the right) more because they’re such heavy waves breaking in less than two feet of water, most people are too scared to surf there. I’ll take an empty closeout over a disney-crowded 100yd wave any day.

And yes, surfing behind someone is actually usually a joy for me if they rip and I have my gopro in my mouth like I do in this clip - but when you’re a donkey, or when you look back and make eye contact and then keep surfing… that grinds my gears

I would’ve been waiting for that fakah on the beach!

C’mon up (or down) to San Luis Obispo County and I’ll show you plenty of waves… literally miles of waves and you can have them all to yourself and maybe a few sharks.  ChrisP knows.

The problem with confrontational situations in the water is you never know what you’re up against.  A guy might be a karate expert, a lawyer, or have a rich dad who can hire a lawyer.  You could find yourself in a fight and get your ass kicked.  Or, win the fight and have the lawyer dad take your ass to court where you’ll likely lose and end up paying a fine, or even be put in jail.

A violent (head butting/rib breaking) local guy at Port Hueneme had some legal troubles several years ago and found himself on the judge’s bad side. If I recall, he was prohibited from surfing his local break for 3 years.  He broke the last bit and was caught.  I think he spent time in jail for that.

Shit, these days, someone might have a gun in their car and be waiting for you when you exit the water.

Can’t we all just get along?

I’m a bit confused by this one… how exactly are they dropping in BEHIND you? Unless they’re just catching the foam ball??? 99% of the time if there’s someone behind you, it’s because you just burned them… maybe you were further outside paddling and they were paddling towards the set from the inside, but fact remains if they were deeper it’s their wave… Saying someone dropped in “behind you” is an argument paddleboarders like to make to claim someone burned them because they were “already on the wave” even though they caught it way outside, away from the peak when it was still a roller… that kind of ettiquete is just as bad

Why would anyone get worked up about that? Surprised that it was worth filming, editing, uploading a video clip, pretty sure that was knee high dribble

< edit - oops I just read the OP and saw this:

clip I made the other day making light of getting burned on a wave

as a kid my dad alway told me “put your brain in gear before you put your mouth in motion”

you’d think I woulda learned after all these years

That’s why if you do scrap, you let them land the first punch - control the situation and it’s self defense!

But it’s best just to not scrap

Well, first of all, nobody got worked up about it… second of all, if you’re interested how wide-angle lenses mounted from a high point work, they make a head-high wave look knee-high due to near-field distortion… that’s why when you mount a gopro on your tail a small wave looks huge and when you hold it above your head on a pole a big wave looks small. Again - it meerely brings up the point that almost nobody knows/cares about priority… but if I understand what you’re telling me correctly, you feel that priority only matters in epic conditions? I’ll keep that in mind if I’m ever surfing the same break as you on a smaller day - apparently you’re okay with everyone dropping in on you on every wave as long as it isn’t macking pipeline

Ha, YES! THIS RIGHT HERE is how every dropin should be handled…

haha I posted a retraction same time as you replied to my original message

yes I understand the distortion commonly seen in go pro vids.

yes if we’re out on the same day I give you permission to drop in on me in fact if you ever see me out in waves like that, paddle up to me and remind me of this thread and send me in. Please

best of times

worst of times

You catch a wave on the peak, where it is breaking. You’re riding, la la la. Someone paddles, turns around, catches it behind you (if there’s space… and if you take a speedy high line and leave that space, some clowns think that’s fair game).

Happens alot at Middle Peak at the Lane. People catch the soup of the already broken wave- behind you.

And I’m not on an SUP. Usually on a mat, which, trust me, is not a wave-catching machine to put it mildly.

It’s a matter of being in position, and Ye Olde “first one up and riding has priority”- a rule that existed prior to the SUP invasion (and is applyed in conjunction with “closest to the curl has priority”).

I’m thinking your opinion is an insight into the thinking of those that pull this stunt.

Get a rich dad, a GoPro (to film the assault)… then drop’in like a boss… send all locals to jail !

That may be a solution too. I’ll call my dad see if he became rich last night…

Of course etiquette is NOT dead… just check out how respectful Nathan Strom is in this video posted on the Surfer Magazine website!

Gordof that first one one is classic

Been surfing since the late '60s. There never was surf ettiquette. There was pecking order and mite is right. You earn your spot in the pecking order and that doesn’t mean anything to someone who doesn’t care and will go toe to toe with you on the beach.

Seen things go from crazy to cool and back more than a few times. Right now the crowds are back and there’s no respect in the water. Too many beginner idiots and no one to tell them where they should be. Then when they do get told they don’t listen. The only thing that really clears the beach is the Ocean. When the waves get serious the crowds go down.

It also helps to surf in your neighborhood with your homeboyz.

here’s the video. if you’re gonna burn people, learn jujitsu? super lame
