This question was probably posted several times in the past, yet I haven’t been able to find an answer in old posts. I’m wondering if a commercially available cut lap tool that holds a razor to cut the glass at varying widths exists and where I could get it from. Thanks for your input.
I’m not sure if Shwuz has any left out of the batch that he made, send him a PM.
They look pretty slick, very well crafted/designed, and do the trick by all accounts.
Here’s the thread about it http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1029667

Whilst I was in America last, I saw in a souvenir shop, that sold all these funky knives, a special knife that held blades,
These blades in australia are refered to as Stanly Knife blades, or box cutter blades.
Anyways, this knife was more like a pocket knife, you could open the blad with one hand, and reveal the “arm” that held the Blade on the end
I actually laughed to my self that it looked like the worlds most expencive box cutter.
Oh, the shop was in a complex of discount wharehouse / outlets, about half way to LasVegas, from Cali
there was also shoe shops , cloths n shit
i dont understand what these tools are for. really all you need is a block cut to 90 degrees that has a hole to put a pencil through- i’ve seen people use a scrap piece of foam. this is just to scribe a line along the rail to follow when you tape.
when you cut the lap bend the blade, lay it horizontal and cut to the tape line. keep upward pressure on the blade so you hit the tape only and dont cut the foam.
dont hold the blade vertically and cut straight down.
the real trick is being able to tape a perfect curve without a scribe line
There are commercialy available ‘‘leather trimmers’’ which are adjustable, and can be modified for surfboard use. Used them for years, to score the glass, and then trim, as you describe, with a single edge razor blade held at a low angle.
yeah scoring first hadnt thought about that. anyway heres a tip for tapers. use 1/4 inch tape it really does lay cleaner. also you draw out the tape as you are walking backward and sight down the rails as you are laying it.
