Is there a light weight space filler that is stronger than Q Cell I can use for broken board repairs

Thank you so much for your time and trouble Swaylockians. You’ve been more than helpful.

I’ll be following this up. Cheers!

herb i would like to try the diaper filler where can i get some ?? i hit the k1 and it did not break it was also 25 to 50 % lighter and easyeir to shape than q cell or micro but i am allways willing to try something new ,herb is everthing going well god bless richard

Try looking inside a diaper…just kidding!

I may be wrong but if diaper fill is made of poly(fillintheblank),

cheap bed pillows have poly fill inside as well. Some (most?) of those pillow fills

are made with hollow fibers…like nanotubes. I think its called “type II”.

not really sure…someone else might know

No, the diaper filler is something else. It expands into these gooey bubbles when it’s wet.

My kid, many years ago, jumped into a fountain with his diaper on. It pretty much exploded after a couple minutes, leaving this stuff all over the inside of his pants (and the fountain).

Its about the consistency of a pile of Pautzke’s Balls of Fire.

I would love to get together with you Richard and swap or whatever…maybe we can really comeup w/ something even stronger than both…

I know you’re a thinker and is always looking for the next best thing. My normal residence(home/house) is in Anaheim Hills and I do drive to Mission Viejo every night(Sunday night ------Thursday night) for my work(in house nurse).

I think we could benefit from one another’s knowledge,no joke !

Geez ,I still feel bad about how I treated you in the beginning, so I would like to extend my friendship to you.Herb

Yo Herb,

What’s the best way to get the diaper filler to mix uniformly with the resin. The stuff is kinda lumpy and hard to get into a powdery texture to make for a good mix. Secrets - Secrets – You have more than your share!

Seems like if you could get the right mix it’d be perfect to baste a board with before freelap.

Gone Surfin’, Rich

I was only mixing small batches for ding repair but I had no issues with mixing it w/ resin. I added my catalyst first, stirred it in, then just added the filler on top of it and stirred it thoroughly. It almost immediately goes clear(ish) and in a few seconds it starts to gel up. Then you can apply it. The nice part was that I didn’t have to make any tape dams to hold the mix in because it held its shape without that. But definately make a test batch first to get used to it.

Single 4 oz board are supposed to break.

I would refuse to patch these throwaways. Even if you do a good strong job (and somehow it’s miraculously light) they’ll only be broken a day or three later.

I take a personal interest in my work and have no use for the disposable culture. Those that buy into it, well, they have the same mindset, and it’s different from mine.

Anyway, the engineer in me says look at the specifics of the problem:

One: the underlying foam compresses… you can’t do anything about that, it’s what the board is made of.

Two: the Qcel compresses and cracks… because it’s a brittle material, applied in a thin layer; what else would it do?

Three: single four ounce over it… well if the repair doesn’t fail for having little strength in it, then the board will soon be snapped again, elsewhere, anyway.

That said, there are some good suggestions about composite construction in other posts, but they are to some extent overkill when you’re dealing with throwaway boards already.

exactly charlie

i love the feel of poly boards

not to mention the gorgeous resin work of the masters.

just cant see the point in building them single 4oz other than to break

thats the only reason i started composites

cuz i was sick of my boards fallin apart

now after 2 years ive got what im after

poly feel and composite strength

Rich,

I mill small amounts at atime w/a Krups coffee grinder. I’ll bet there’s better ways but, this method has worked well for me.

Also,One small diaper will supply you with about a year’s worth of filler.

If alot of foam is depressed or gone all together in a delam issue,I use a two part polyurethane foaming resin…like what blanks are made of…why use anything else?

Thanks Honolulu, I don’t refuse these throwaways … I’m recycling them and making a little money with my work.

Oddly, (well, not really) my repairs don’t re-break because I do a good job. Wide rail laps and a diamond shaped patch extending at least 18" either side of the break seems to do the job.

What usually happens to these boards? They are traded in and bought by kids as a first shortboard.

As I say not disposed of but recycled… what once was broke is made whole.

Cheers - Lazarus.
