…for me its really easy…M B is a guy who wants more money.period…why he wants more money? doesnt ´had enough…?
I saw some Lost clothing in a local shop yesterday. I checked the labels and they say, “made by our friends in China.” !! Talk about putting some spin on it!
Maybe Matt doesn’t make any decisions on what goes on the clothing labels. I believe he sold the license so he may just be sitting back and collecting the checks, but man, that is the lamest thing I’ve ever seen on a clothing label yet.
How about this instead: “Made by our friends in china, suffering under unjust, dangerous, and environmentally damaging working conditions and paid nearly nothing in a land ruled by a totalitarian political and economic system we prop up by doing business there, but we don’t care because we got this hoodie we are retailing for $49 for less than $5!”
well,after some close consideration…
I HAVE A PLAN
1.we all set out on a quest to buy all that the people of china are throwing away.
next we put our heads together and
make somthing the people of south east asia and the world use all the time!
now we make thesse items for less than they can make em themselves!
then we target the next most popular item one after another
and make 'em
so so cheap
they just cant help but buy’em like
hot ears of corn with hot sauce, and butter
one item at a time we will
WE WILL
take over the mfg world again.
remember …a cut in pay means our grand children will be employed.

Hmmmm Ambrose , you’ve got something there, Foam and fibreglass chopsticks, Hi-tech Compsand chopsticks for the Corporate executive, Hollow wooden chopsticks for the purist, Resin research Epoxy Chopsticks for the enviromentally aware. Where is flex important in a chopstick? Fish and Chip chopsticks - Show me the picture…
My impression of Lost…has always been one of junk boards and a pompas ass running his mouth to say how wonderful and soulful the products were!the boards are generally colorful, poorly built disco-crap the are a waste of the good $ some kids parent threw down to buy it , and it only lasts for a couple of months
sorry Matt, no pity here----hop in bed with your china deal and continue screwing those who know no better
apparently this kook’s never ridden a mayhem.

Matt – cash out and start another deal–you’re getting bitter and

You’re saying you’re taking the piss with Placebo while putting a man’s name (Cory Lopez) to the piss. How can you be taking the piss and signing a man you say you respect to lap up the piss? Hello? You’re both making money selling piss? WHo can respect either one of you?

I just saw the new Surfer with your balsa-railed EPS “Tripwire” board in the board forum–people should recognize that that is a blatant “fuck you” to Bert Berger and Firewire, who, face it, got there first.
You’re fuckin rich already, and they had that one on the ground already, and all the rest of it, so you should cash out, invest in the stock market, shape this and that on the side, and admit that you had your good run.
Anarchist graphics bullshit, selling kids plastic popouts from Asia with a pro endorsement on them. Good shapes on throwaway boards, and the marketing–sooo stupid, so transparent…
…Lost–now improved with 16 oz. cans and righteous indignation energy! Also available in Mark Richards-endorsed Retro flavor!
Surfers as a rule are the most self centered, imature and ego driven bunch you may care to find (exeptions excluded) they have sold out to hollywood, department stores, souless giant so called surf shops etc. Because things are subjective in the sport of surfing, it’s one of the few places a kuk if he hangs around long enough and brags long enough can actually convince other surfers he is somebody important. It’s a suckers industry mostly
While I can’t argue that surfing doesn’t require a self-indulgent streak - otherwise none of us would ever either get anything done or get any waves - I think we should maybe acknowledge that modern society as a whole has created a youth culture that never ends whose primary feature and function is the educated belief that they can buy anything and everything. To buy everything you need a lot of money. Work sucks (who can’t agree with that?) so the most desireable course of action is to “want the most I can posibly get, for the least I can possibly do” (Todd Snider).
Hence the goal in all endeavours is to sell out as fast as possible, as frequently as possible, for as much as possible.
Anybody with a corporate job outside surfing can tell how totally fucked up modern business is. Gut the workforce, force out the older experienced workers who get higher wages, fill the gaps with newbies, pay them way more than they are worth because it’s still less than the experienced people, and try to hang on for a few fiscal quarters more. Want to know why many companies don’t want to hire someone over 50? People over 50 have generally had a fair bit of experience in various workplaces and also tend to hear the lifeclock ticking…makes them much less tolerant of bullshit and slackers. They tend to stand their ground, which in modern HR-speak means “hard to train”.
Independence is seen as a threat, so the independent (of any age) are first marginalized, identified, and then culled from the herds. Longboarder, sponger, old guy…retro, pupe, eps, import.
“Brand loyalty for life” is a common retail goal. Anybody who can say that phrase without laughing has sold their soul to the devil. I suspect from the alleged Biolas e-mail/post and his reference to the “Placebo” label that he can still laugh.
What I am talking about is endemic to society, not just surfing…but society has flooded surfing through the massive influx of new surfers in the past 6-8 years. This has nothing to do with a lack violent beachside enforcers. When the majority of participants sufficiently support a certain product, it becomes the standard. Quality, tradition…nothing else matters. “Money talks and bullshit walks”, the saying goes…almost automatically making the definition that if money isn’t involved it’s BS. Money is the validating factor.
It isn’t them and us anymore…it’s them! And they want to gnaw the flesh off our skulls!
we owe it all to someone that will never get paid.

well done Nels.

In the clear light of 9:30 a.m., still less than 12 hours after I wrote that first post (does anybody actually get 8 hours of sleep without being drunk?), I probably need to add/clarify a couple of my comments, such as the one quoted above.
I consider that to be descriptive of the mental set of the standard youth culture extreme sport enthusiast, if not the standard youth. Youth in 2006 can probably describe the standard yahoo anywhere from age 45 on down. I really don’t consider anybody of any age who participates in the Swaylocks forums as standard.
“Brand loyalty for life” is a common retail goal. Anybody who can say that phrase without laughing has sold their soul to the devil. I suspect from the alleged Biolas e-mail/post and his reference to the “Placebo” label that he can still laugh.
Meaning I don’t think he has sold his soul to the devil based on what has been recently presented. And even if so, it pales in comparison to the moral imperatives that his average customer base happily embraces. There seems to me to be some difference between his alleged actions and motivations and the machinations of much of the rest of the established surf industry. In the end a lot of people depend on him and his decisions and he’s walking along the edge of a razor. Even if you make it across you get all cut up.
There is seismic activity all across the Pacific Rim. Cameron Diaz is probably one of the best known surfers on earth, along with her “Charlie’s Angels” co-star Demi Moore, Laird Hamilton, Kelly Slater, and Bethany Hamilton. Should the Ben Stiller movie get made we can expect another round of pop cultural tough-love. Society owns surfing now; we’re just along for the ride.
I still can’t get Walmart to sell me an Enzo for $3.99
I know there’s lots of demand for them
Oh well, according to M.B. Ferrari will soon be forced to kneel to our wishes
Can’t wait – mine’s gonna be red
I am sure this is over-simplifying the issue, but it seems to me that the roots of all evil in this equation are the self-proclaimed surf apparel companies. I believe thay are directly responsible for the bread-head mentality that has taken over the industry. I realize I am preaching to the choir, but if it does not actually have a direct connection to riding waves, DO NOT BUY THE S–T!
Apologies in advance for the all-caps…
P.O.P.E.
you know, this thread has developed a life of it’s own far beyond what it deserves----a self serving email from ‘matty the lost guru’ and all the responses and vibes it has caused on swaylocks. crap board , weird attitude and all that stuff—we should let it die quietly…
can I please have a LOST energy drink!!!
Biolos is the man! that’s it.
yah right!
- I just saw the new Surfer with your balsa-railed EPS “Tripwire” board in the board forum–people should recognize that that is a blatant “f$$$ you” to Bert Berger and Firewire, who, face it, got there first.
I have not read the generic surf ad mags in years. But because of your post here I looked through the recent Surfer mag and found this board you mention above.
Wasn’t this Lost owner putting down epoxy, epoxy makers (one who spearheaded parabolic stringers), and alternative construction in his posts originally?
Now he is using a blatant play on words logo to make himself look like he is an innovator? He’s a salesman for sure.
I saw this in surfermang forum. I did a search and someone mentioned Matt Posts under Mayhemb3 handle or something like that … MaYbe he’ll post?
Anyone know if this is true?
Here is the source files:
title is this: Email I came across. Straight from Biolos’ keyboard
Quote:Copying some e-mail from another forum is lame. Mr. Big is Lost Who cares?
I don’t understand what all the fuss is about.
First and foremost: I don’t think Swaylocks is a place for whining, it’s a place for sharing knowledge, or praise, and to get inspired. At least that’s why I read these pages
Then: we cannot complain about the globalization/massification of the surf industry if we enjoy its benefits in any other aspect of our lives (including surfing itself: when’s the last time you had a wetsuit handmade for yourself?).
it has bad and good sides, but they generally go together, just live with it. The best you can do is trying to be decent in your own little existence (someone mentioned the power of the consumer)
Fighting windmills does generally no good except to literature, and the most hard core critics often times jump the barricades and join the enemy: anybody wonders where are all the kids that were protesting in 1968? did they all die except for the few that still look like frozen in time, but with a weird aging process going on?
As for “the industry” and all the small shapers/glassers in danger, I’m sorry for some of them, but not for all. A lot of them deserve to be out of work.
I know I’m gonna attract a lot of anger because of this statement, but I believe that if you’re a craftman you should have care and consideration, and respect, in what you do. A lot of people in “the industry” are just a bunch of alcoholics (or with other random addictions) who are slightly more productive than a bum, bitch all the time and hardly ever deliver.
Those who deserve respect will stay, and carry on with an honorable (although possibly not very profitable) existence; those who want an empire will “sell out” (although I don’t agree with this definition), and run a successful business (if they’re good). The others will go out of business, and will finally have to get a job.
what we are seeing is just a normal step in the evolution of any market and industry, like it or not. I believe the most surprising thing is it took so long for this to happen, considering how much money revolves around this.
As for Lost, Placebo and Matt Biolos, I like him (but it has anything to do with this). He’s obviously smart, committed, and I hope he keeps succeeding. From what I can tell he’s definitely a much more interesting character than Merrick or Rusty, and I have had a Lost (that I got used, and cheap), and it was a great board to me. And I like the Placebo idea. By the way, has anybody tried one? do they really feel better then surftechs?
borrowing the closing line from a fellow swaylokian:
“sorry for my english”
ps: save the angry comments about my reference to alcoholic shapers: Predictable and expected. let’s save the bandwith for meaningful comments
