Itchy

Apparently I had nothing better to do than get itchy on a nice, sunny Saturday morning…

This was an early eps board which had been sitting around for a while in surfboard purgatory. It was shaped with a heavily concaved deck, which led to some high-shouldered rails, and overall it felt too bulky and corky. So out came the grinder and in a few minutes…voila! A new board (of sorts).

using up all that leftover glass: damming the rails for a fairing compound fill:

A month or so later and I finally got back into this particular project.

Gooped up the rails:

Re-shaped them and laid out a new fin arrangement:

The point of this little exercise was to show that with a bit of grinding and putty its possible to recycle-by-modifying an existing board. Or is it a case of trying to make a pig fly? Or make a silk purse from a sow’s ear? Maybe I’m casting pearls…(nevermind, just kidding!).
