… is what I told my oldest son, when he wondered why I was so stoked, referring to my latest creation… How fast it went from a 96"x24"x3" sheet - well not that fast: I hot wired the seven sections, and each one took as long as a 11" wide sheet of 2# eps, so that was a bit of a revelation…, Glued up a very rough looking thing… Then a few minutes… And I’m ready for one of my favorite parts of the party… Shots from this morning just for fun…
I feel like PeeWee, in his Big Adventure, when he see’s his bike… The shed…
Well - I got deep into it, but I realized I hadn’t practiced full memory retrieval, or the implications.
What I mean is, having read that folk get enough stiffness from glue lines, I thought I’d be good with six of 'em… Not! After feeling how flexy the tail was getting, I realized folk here were talking about eps, which is much stiffer than xps… Ha!
So, I’m gonna get the deck side “close,” in the nose and tail, and then I’m gonna glue some carbon fiber tow (Thanks again, again Keith M.!!!) into the deck channels… I figure if I’m nice and careful I won’t have to do to much to it before laming…
I’ll try to document the flex before and after for fun-knowledge for any who may try this… I saw a board made the same way, but it was thick and flat, and I didn’t ask the maker about the flex thing…
I put a lay out of carbon fiber on the deck side… first flex “test” was to push down on it… Till pretty flexy, but when I pulled up on it… Nice and stiff… Which is just what I needed…
Now think about the mechanical physics of that… Ha!
The Low Tech Lab is happy to have TaylorO on board. Great stuff Taylor.......We broke all the cheap Harbor frieght clamps and did 5 or 6 glue ups using only tape and elbow power. Love to see more photos.....
Nick - I suppose it’s a fire hazard, but no more than many things. I run the electricty in from the house w/two different heavy duty cords, plugged in to outlets on seperate breakers, and then I have have two power strips in the shed, both with circut breakers built in. Never had anything get hot.
Ray - Yea, I got four 2’ bar clamps from some super cheap weird little hard ware place in an outlet mall. Two pipe clamps, 2’, 15" from a pawn shop, some cargo straps, and some old bike intertubes (Thanks ambrose!), works well enough…
S.D. - If I come down that way, I’ll take you up on the offer. Maybe we can work something out around next years Swayloholix gathering…
And now for more pics:
