Why wasn’t I informed? I have been toiling in the heat completely covered in dust and and wearing a jump suit and mask. I stop every 15 min to drink water. I hate it. But I do it.
A week ago I saw some wet/dry sandpaper in my plastic box and gave it a try. I’ve called my lawyer and have begun the patent process. All ya’ll can use the technique free.
Hi Greg - Are you machine sanding with the wet/dry paper? Most guys keep a squirt bottle handy as they’re sanding. I also keep a stainless steel ruler to ‘scrape’ off any goobers as they form. I just place it on edge as the pad is spinning. I’ve saved a few sheets that way.
I know this is gonna sound sick…
but its the closest thing to having sexual relations with your unfinished design
kind of like a pro feeling up shaped blank with eyes closed when finished
but with a wet sponge, tub of water with a drop of liquid dish washing soap and a soft foam base or hard piece of rubber to wrap your wet wet/dry 320/400/600/800/1200/2400 paper you control the cut, the curves and the shine all at the same time.
I think there’s a clip in the movie shapemakers where an aussie shaper demonstrates wet sanding
you can never ruin a board wet sanding versus using a machine
it just takes time and patience
in the old days all we had to finish off our boards was an old black and decker finish sander, wet sand paper, car compound and turtle wax.
A word of caution. Beware inexpensive wet/dry. I wet sanded a board years ago using paper I got from Harbor Freight. The ultra fine particles came off of the paper and found their way into any pores they could find in the glass job. Pores you would have needed a microscope to see had black specs of the sandpaper trapped inside. I only use 3M, klingspor or Indasa wet dry paper now.
Amazon, Ebay all have good deals on good paper. The supply houses have like 50 sheets for 15 -20 bucks of the right paper. we buy a lot from a local abrasives supply. We actually get a lot of tape from the local body supply shop. cheaper than all the surf guys
Under water sanding works even better, because the paper is always clean and most effective. I filter the used sanding water through a plant pot with plaster of Paris set in it to keep the particles from entering the waterways.
I used this place to get sanding supplies. Good prices. https://2sand.com/
I thought you were going to say you were doing the sanding in the rain or with a water hose to keep cool. Sanding in the rain here in Hawaii is not unusual. We often get light rains and there’s no threat of lightning.
I’ll do wet sanding outside with the water hose and get wet, but only for hand sanding. I’ve done final extra fine sanding at the beach just before a first go out. I’ve taken a small piece of fine grit paper out surfing for minor adjustments.
I have a small 1/4 sheet finish sander that use for wet sanding. 220 up to 3000.
I think I got Aluminum Oxide from this place. It was the red pack, and for courser grits between 60 and 320. The 220 and 320 are wet/dry.
The last batch of wet/dry sandpaper I got was off of eBay or Amazon, and it was to get 3000 grit. I think I got a set of 2000, 2500 and 3000 and only 3 sheets each from a german supplier. I rarely use these fine grits, but I’m making a couple wall hanger boards, so I want to get the best finish I’ve ever done. On my boards, I usually only go to 1200 for the rails, but the bottoms only to 600. All epoxy resin.
Our local hardware stores don’t sell large packs of sandpaper or fine grits, so getting it online is better.
The above information, is not the first time you’ve made an outstanding contribution, to the forum. The micromesh may well be able to be used to sharpen hand plane and planer blades too.
