Jalian- Highest margins in the surf industry

Jalian is a silver spoon palos verdes kid who used to rip indies and points north and south

who decided to ditch it all and move to indo to live in a treehouse and stitch old pieces

of clothing together in to patchwork pants and shirts.

The fact that he’s been able to sustain this lifestyle is a testament to his family’s trust

fund and/or the absolutely ridiculous prices that japanese will pay for seemingly hideous

clothing…I haven’t decided which.

It’s nice to see artist get recognition for their accomplishments. It must have taken some time for someone to think it is worth of a story for publication. Soul man for sure. Everybody comes from somewhere. Spread the wealth.

hahahahahahah…rich.

touche.

I couldn't believe the big bucks that this guys hats and stuff go for. Maybe shaping is the wrong end of this business to be on? There are some pretty good sway craftsman that could probably make some great stuff like Jalian.

I don’t think what Jalian is doing is part of the surf industry at all. If an investment banker surfs his income is not part of the surf industry. (Oh, wait, maybe investment bankers aren’t the best category to be talking about right now).

I give any artist his due. There’s a latin saying they use in Italy- Degustibus non desputatem est. You can’t argue about taste. So you may not like what he’s doing but give him credit for trying. I looked at his website and, aside from the funky head wear, well, his stuff was…interesting. No prices listed though. I’d probably rather have one of his shirts than a Hollister tee though.

Also, AFOAF, as one who grew up on “the HIll”, not all PV kids have trust funds. In fact no one I know had a fund. Most have or had big student loan debts. Not all engage in violent acts of localism, but yeah we do laugh when someone comes down the wrong trail at Indicators wearing their wetsuit, but, hey, it is humorous.

I KNOW you didn’t just call me out for suiting up at the top!!!

hahahahahaha

Sorry, I didn’t mean to generalize…I was actually surfing with a guy that

graduated high school with “Jali”…the subject came up and he had a pretty

funny take on the guy as only a person who had spent his formative years

with someone could have.

I should probably also add that I intended no disrespect to trust funds,

artists, people who sew patchwork or the japanese fashionistas.

I think he would have been more of a legend if he sent over a whole quiver for pipe. Like a 13’, a 13’ 4" and a 13’ 8". To think he can get away with a one board quiver for the North Shore is what destroys a potential legend in the making.

It certainly would have been a more comprehensive approach to send over more than one board but I think Roy probably has his hands full with family and business and maybe doesnt have the financial leeway to splash out to the full extent.

On the other hand, he might just have sent over “the perfect board” and doesnt need to send a quiver. ??

I never had much faith in his theoretical work, despite his obvious skill as a craftsman, but I tend to believe his claims moreso after trying some tunnel fins.

If he’s right about tunnel fins ,he might just be right about other matters.

It’s a little hard swallow that this is a rich kid from Palos Verdes named Allen who had some epiphany (and accompanied self applied name change-Jalian) after his 30 something Phish concert. I know, room for growth. They say he’s not a trustafarian but if you do the math he sure had to sell a lot of his $1,500 hats to buy six acres on the big island. Maybe his hats/shirts are effectively just “popouts”??? Do you think when he is off on his Indo trips that he dumps off a pile of refuse/flotsam/shit at local villages and says “sew this into a hat/shirt!”

llilibel03, you’re right- he is not really doing a surf industry thing. Cardinal sin and all, I’d rather have the Hollister shirt/ hat though. Prostitution is the oldest business in the world, however, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is the oldest business slogan and has kept many charlatan’s aloft.

I apologize to you for you taking my quiver comment seriously.

Your tunnel fin reasoning is wrong on many levels to include I don’t accept your premise of it being a “success”. If you could demonstrate the great success of tunnel fins the logic fails again. Adolph Hitler was right about the autobahn, the Volkswagen, and making the trains run on time in Germany.

Bill B. summed it up best. The hype will make it a potential success just with one picture of it on a Hawaiian wave with a Hawaiian sky back drop. The waves I have seen it on of any real size have been in brown, stormy surf that makes the board seem as far away from fun or function as you can get.

Attention seeking results, positive or negative will be guaranteed . But the practicality of it eludes me still. Thirteen feet, heavy and 15 thousand dollars plus for a board. I think it should be called the “El grandiose narcissist” model

Roy is a success in my eyes for many reasons. He is a good craftsman as seen by many of his beautiful boards he makes. His love for his family and the non conformist lifestyle he chooses to live. Anyone who has personally met him has only reported nice things to say about him. But when I consider the time and effort and money that has been put into this project to basically settle an argument over the internet about a surfboard…check please waiter!!
