I read there was some action on Hawaii, and on the west US coast…
Anyone got any first hand reports…

Hey Hicks,
We had some extreme fluctuations in water levels (tides don’t move all too much normally) here on oahu, I heard that at one point some of the boats were stuck in the harbor. At Lani’s I swore I could feel a weird bump in the channel, kind of like when we have a little more size (it was maybe shoulder high that day). There wasn’t any extreme currents that I could feel though.
in the news and on the coconut wireless
tales of the fluxuations are swirling about.
Cataclysmic no . Apparent yes
the fact thet we went to the beach for a stroll between tasks
was oppertune.the flattening and draining
of the lagoon behind the house was dramatic.
a small event ,by geologic standards,
but surely an eye opener.
the large pond that is the pacific is effected
by the seismic rock dropping into the still corner
and radiating throughout.
We are connected on all shorelines.
when it comes… we all will be here.
small organisms in space on a planet
we call home…
…ambrose…
Howzit Hicksy, Had a friend who was surfing Hanalei when it hit, said it was a weird sensation as the tide rushed out. The reef at Hanalei went dry and the my friend said they were moving really fast as he watched the bottom flying by under him. The news said there were 8 surges. The closest thing to warning people were the life guards telling people to stay out of the water and get to a higher spot along the beach. O n Oahu there was a small plane flying along the shore warning surfers about the tsunami. Big article in local news about why Kauai was not properly informed. Aloha, Kokua

Howzit skiny, No they didn’t fall but their feet were scraping the reef, same thing happened to another friend who was surfing Tunnels when it hit.Aloha Kokua

For surfers, near as I can see, it was pretty much a non-event. One paper carried a story about Bobby Owens (?) drifting out and in at Turtle Bay. There were pictures of surge at Nawiliwili Harbor too. Waianae harbormaster says total rise and fall was six feet. Probably stretched some mooring lines. At any rate, it wasn’t a surfable wave, more like a short-period tide.

While the results in Hawaii may have been fairly non-eventish, close to $1 million in damages happened in Crescent City, California, when the “surge” took out a couple of boat docks and freed up some fishing boats. It was recorded in some way all the way down to Port San Luis by Pismo Beach.
The real thing in this incident is that the warning systems really didn’t work for many places…I am told privately there is some controversy about how things went on getting the word to Kauai in particular, and certainly everything had been cancellled for California well before the actual event struck…if there ever was a full scale warning. The news accounts I have seen (I live out of impact areas) all are pretty self congratulatory about how well things went, but any of you guys who literally saw any results, ask yourself if it had been bigger what would have happened to you or your friends? This was a serious failure in my book, but I don’t write the Science/Politics bible…
