Greetings. Casual shaper , and a really long layoff, so I thought i would come back here and share a few things. Trying to get my tools back together and have most everything...except my skil and a few misc. I did however; buy the Jim Phillips DVD. NOW I get a few things.... I did shape a few really decent boards in the back yard a few years ago..and glassed 'em there too. Friends still ride them. I did have the oppurtunity to get in a bay with someone who had been taught to shape by someome "Famous"...did learn what the lights in the room could do.....but, shaping rails with a sander was not what I expected.... I did get a nice board with that strategey, But I had always suspected there was more to the planer. I was shaping longboards, so maybe a difference from the shortboard shaping methodlogy? My first boards were meticoulsly laid out and , maybe in retrospect..I WAS doing it right with a lot of Planer and Less of everything else. After wathching Jim's DVD I feel redemption....Thanks to the Genius!! I really liked the idea of the shapers paddle...seems the perfect way to chase down those bumps.....I searched everywhere and could not find anything on the paddle. Heres mine, I did mine with a drumsander and Jig on my Drillpress with template. Handel is rough, but concave and convex are good.

no luck posting phots, any advice?
Interesting device
I made myself something similar and use it also for crowning decks
its an arc about 18 inches long with 60 grit glued to it
Looks good !
I’ve been meaning to make one of those too , after buying JP’s dvd - seeing that gives me another nudge.
What’s that orange thing - mini home studio or for jamming to cd’s and slowing down solos ?
And a Boss DDL … looks like a keyboard stand hiding by the wall … why are so many surfers / surfboard buffs also musos ?!
And what’s up with the Coors Light? Man-Up and get a real beer!
I remember watching Jim cut in all of his rail bands; then holding one end up blank up off the rack and sighting down the rail he would take the paddle and make microscopic adjustments to bands five feet away from his eye. Saved a lot of time rather than alternating between looking and adjusting. Of course he would just take that time saved and put it back into obsessing over his screen work on the rail. He only knows one way to shape and it ain't the speed-merchant style.
Dude. Coors Light?!
Light and the word beer are mutually exclusive. I will assume the carbonated beverage was placed there by a visitor.
Please edit/select your photos more carefully in the future.
Looks good, but what happens when someone bowls a yorka??, middle stump will go flying!!.
On a serious note, that looks like a very ingenius tool!. Got plenty of wood for one, just need a drum sander etc.
Yep, after watching Jim’s dvd again just last night I’m inspired to make one of these as well, yours looks good nosetime! This is indeed a great tool.
I also need to make a few curved sanding blocks from some HD foam I have laying around for tuning deck crowns and concaves (although I’m steering clear of special bottom contours for a while, less is more when learning this craft I think ).
What’s wrong with Curs-lite? It’s Working Man’s beer! You can run that table saw or band saw and drink beer without worrying about impairing your judgment. You can actually hydrate yourself while using your chain saw while up in a tree. My only question is why Curs-lite? Getting a little wide around the middle? Curs is already lite. So Curs-lite is light- lite. Just drink regular Curs while working and get all that extra flavor! I’m gonna pick up a 18 pack( a Carmel Valley six pack) for 12 bucks today. Yum. Mike
Thanks for putting up the pics Huck, can you PM how to do that ? Ah, the Coors...about all I can handle without getting in too much trouble or too fat! I have some pics of a drumsanding template jig if anyone wants some ideas.
Yeah, go on … we love pics.
Indeed Rooster, that is also a Huntington Beach 6 pack! My friend played on the Jr Eagles national rugby team in the 1980's. I know what Aussies, New Zelanders and the like consider beer and beer drinking....but, at 50 I am a Coors Light only guy....kind of like a golf hanicap, it keeps me in the game.
You all suck. I can’t even have a Coors Light. I take these blood medicines that forced me to quit drinking. And smoking. And eating Pizza.and and and. Ah never mind.
I'm not having much luck finding The Jim Phillips DVD. Anybody know where to buy one?
Go to Damascus Productions online.
Nice paddle… Great for tuning up the rails while standing at the nose and tail. I really like the product placements as well. Stay tuned up with Coors and Boss pedals:)
