sweet . . .

Thanks for the pm to stick em up here, JJR

" John is in town right now and I can’t tell you how stocked I am to be able to get on his list for a board. This is #2 for me and I really got to fine tune this one in the room with John. John has gotta be one of the most humble shapers I’ve met. We really see eye to eye on alot of things…so I just gave him my dims and he let her rip!

6’0" x 20.75" x 2.5" chine rail double bump quad "

Note bevel

I wish there were a few more shots. Especially with views of the construction of thoes chined wings. I can figure them out…I think. Looks like a two part templating process. First cut the smooth rail, then apply the template with the wings and carefully shape them using a piece of pipe w/ sandpaper attached? The photos provide a good refrence to shape them to the rail. I am sure Fred D. Tool would help getting the bevel started on the chine right? Purests using a shearform for sure right?

That is rad!

How do I get him to shape me one? I saw one at Surfride the other day and it spoke to me.

How does it compare to the Pavel Quad?

can someone explain to me the rails on the rear at the wings? Seems to me that the rails would be really really soft and it wouldn’t perform as well.

My new GH fish, the rails are pinched A LOT and towards the rear they are very sharp, sharper than any of my shortboards and waaaay sharper than any of my fish. I LOVE this GH, I would think for a more high performance fish, you would want a more aggressive rail???

Hey RodH,

the other day we were looking over his personal 5’7" and he explained the bevels he uses

in his rails. JB really likes using chines and subtle chines. He said the hard bevel still allows

the wider-tailed board to go rail-to-rail quicker, yet when the board is on rail in a committed

turn, the wing still bites deeper into the water providing more holding power.

John really knows his stuff, and he ripped that little board in good sized Hawaiian surf. He

is super-humble and just loves to make boards. His words are worth listening to…

thanks for posting all those pics. it really helps to get a handle on a few subtle things. what a lovely shape. i can see it’s just oozing with fun, even here from tens of thousands of kilometres away.

Are you putting lokbox in? If so, how do you work it into the concave?

Also, what fins are you going to use?

I’d love to see the finished board…

The lighting in the room makes the concaves look deeper than they actually are. We’ve done lots of these already and the boxes go right in no probs. For fins I’ll try my trusty turbo speedialers first, then maybe some more traditional raked fins like LB1’s and LB4’s. I’ll be posting more pics as the board gets glassed. Cheers.

curious… turbo sd’s are great, but what do you think of them on a fish with a narrower tail? - like the viper?

JJR

Can’t really comment until I get her in the water.

Hey JJR,

When are you going to post a lokbox install video? I was thinking of buying a kit but noticed that lokbox doesnt have a video.

So, why didn’t you install the boxes prior to laminating and add patches over the 4 ounce bottom skin?

Two reason actually. The laminator showed up before I had the boxes in and couldn’t wait around as he had other work to do that day. In other words…I lagged. And secondly, we’ve found the system to be slightly stronger when installed through the lamination before the hotcoat, so it was OK that I lagged.

This has been discussed before here and when the boxes sit flush to the lamination they have the resistance of that layer of glass for the boxes to sit against, rather than being flush to the foam where you are just relying on the two layers of glass capping over the boxes for strength. This is especially beneficial when doing large twins or keels.

What glassing schedule did you use for this board and where are you going to ride it first?

How long do you wait from when its finished being glassed to when you ride it?

All 4 ounce “s” glass. 4+4+4 with 5 ounce tail patch. Board got laminated last thursday so if I surf it tomorrow it’ll have roughly 1 week cure time. This is King Mac foam and I must say it feels hard as rock at this point.

Most likely o-side south jetty area.

Jim…

i’m curious…how did you get the install flush where the lip on the boxes overlapped the concave?

Just installed them like usual. Didn’t do anything different. This board has a pretty steep concave next to the rear boxes which required a bit of a delicate touch with the sanding machine while scooping the concave back out. But any good sander would have no problem with that bottom. I posted the pics with the level across the bottom to show that the boxes did not effect or minimize Johns contours. Cheers

Here’s a couple of shots from my last surf on the board. It goes really good!! Still trying to suss out the best fins for it. Riding the turbo canard cutaways here…

Been wondering what happened to this project since seeing original thread some months ago … worth the wait !!!

Very very nice piece of work … I’ll bet it feels even better

Anyway, many thanx for update, enjoy and keep posted on fin testing

Happy Dayzzzzzz

I saw mention that Mr. Belik lives on Maui… Where does he shape over there? I’m over on the Big Island, but Maui’s just a hop, skip and jump away…

Mahalo!
