Just finished sanding hot coat.. gloss type questions

I just finished sanding my hot coat down… on my first board… did a blue and white resin swirl and I think it came out pretty good… has the new FCS plugs and what not, ill be sure to get pics when done. I just put a pin line on it and sanded it down good but now I dont know what to do… I dont have gloss resin but I have enough lam resin to make a “Cheater coat” or should I go buy some acrylic type spray or whatever? if another cheater hot coat how should I mix it?

Buy some styrene instead and mix it in your lam resin together with surfacing agent: here you are, glossing resin.

As for percentages to mix, I suggest you search for “Kokua’s recipe”…

Howzit balsa, When using lam resin instead of glossing resin you need to add some extra S.A> to the mix to make sure there in enough wax in the mix. Glossing resin has wax in it to begin with so that’s why you need more when using lam resin. Another trick is if you use Silmar gloss resin, add some lam resin to quicken the kicking off time.Aloha,Kokua

Howzit Kokua, I knew that. I was just helping out BobMarley to make gloss resin out of lam resin. And suggested he went through the archives to find the correct percentages. Thanks, anyway.

How are the waves in Kauai? We have been getting 10’ to 15’ for the last few days here in Guéthary. (That’s 6’ on the hawaiian scale, right?)

Howzit balsa, It's been a slow starting season but things are picking up and we just had out 3rd good sizes swell. Aloha,Kokua

Thanks guys :), but I looked in the archive and COULDNT find the percentages of stuff to use…

If you’d be willing to share that it would be much appreciated

fyi, I bought styrene just for this purpose… but cant find the info

Howzit bob, Add 10% styrene and 2-4% S.A, to glossing resin, that's the formular. If you are using Silmar resin add some lam resinto the mix before adding styreneand S.A., this will hurry the kicking off time.Aloha,Kokua

Thanks kokua, you are the man of this forum… maybe when I go to home to maui for the summer we’ll pay kauai a visit, check out your stuff

Howzit bob, Sounds good to me, all Swaylocks brothers are always welcome to my little shop of horrors.Aloha,Kokua

Has anyone ever sprayed a gloss coat on an epoxy board with a water-based acrylic using high-volume/low-pressure spray system?

Thanks,

Maxwell

Aloha Kokua, do you have a formula for using laminating resin? I have a lot of laminating resin and sanding resin, but very little finishing resin. I’ve just been adding a little acetone to sanding resin to thin it out some for my final coat.

I know Bernie has all the other stuff and your formula, but unless I go to his place, I don’t use that.

Aloha sharkcountry, Do you want to use those 3 resins as a finish coat gloss? I find that you can get a decent gloss out of sanding resin and you can add SA to your lam resin to make it sanding resin. You could add the finish resin to the sanding resin ( also the lam resin made to SA resin) but I would definitely do a test first. I add lam resin to old gloss resin to make it kick since old gloss resin has a tendency to take a very long time to kick which can cause some headaches. You can tell if gloss resin is bad since it will usually have a white layer in the bottom of the can and even if you shake the can til the cows come home it won't change how the resin kicks. How are you and bernie doing these days, I know I was pretty out of it on morphine when you visited me at Queens. Aloha,Kokua

Thanks Kokua, I usually don’t do a gloss coat. I do a second sand coat that has been thinned down, then sand it a bit to get the edges off the rails. If the first sand coat is thick enough, I may just sand it till its pretty smooth, then pau. I don’t care about a nice glossy finish for my boards. 600 grit to 1200 grit is just fine. This has been mostly from working with epoxy. We would use a polyurethane gloss finish, but I stopped doing that.

The last 4 or 5 boards I’ve made have been PU/PE, so I’ve been using the poly resins, and it’s so much quicker to make a board with PU/PE. For Poly work, it would be easier to just have one type of resin and then add the extra stuff to make it a sanding resin or a finishing resin. I know guys that only buy laminating resin, but I also buy sanding resin. Also, if you use UV resin and pigment, would you use the same amount of catalyst that you would use for non-UV resin? I’ve been using non-UV and catalyst for colors.

I did notice that finishing resin takes a lot longer than both Laminating and Sanding resin to kick.

We’re doing pretty good. I hope you are getting better as well. Are you eating solid foods?

Maybe next time Keith heads over to Kauai Bernie and I can take a road trip. I wouldn’t mind surfing Hanalei. I’ve only surfed Poipu, and Pakalas.

Aloha, Harry

Howzit sharkcountry, With glossing resin you just add more catalyst, I use about 25 cc's for 20 oz of resin and that's resin that has been thinned out 10% with styrene and another 5% SA so it is pretty thin with those additives and kicks in about 10 minutes. I have used both reichold and slymar and reichold will kick faster and I believe that F H sell reichold not slymar gloss resin. If I had to do just one job in a surfboard factory it would be glossing since I have a pasion for it , but I also d it all except for epoxy. Once again I want to thank you and Bernie for visitingme in the hospital. By the way I have asked Bernie a bunch of times for both o your trunk sizes so I could send you some Hanalei Board Shorts, a friend owns the company and he is always giving me freebies. Aloha,Kokua

P.S. It would e great to meet you again since I barely remember you due to my condition when you came to queens, I ws really in La La land.

Wow, kokua --you should do a video just on glossing – a late addition to the “Masters” series!
