Just moved to Southern California...

I was wondering if any of you guys knew of any jobs someone would available in the area. Me and my friend living here dont really care exactly where we end up, we’re in north hollywood at the moment with some friends. however, this is not where we want to end up.

If someone can hook a somewhat desperate shaper up with some leads, I would appreciate it very much. Ive been looking and applying everywhere (only been here for two days and one night - already getting a bit desperate).

My experience ranges from customer service to shipping, to machine work (in a box plant setting) to small management.

That’s a small resume I typed up. If any of you could help, that would be great. At the moment I’m just looking for something to get some income rolling in so I can begin surfing and shaping instead of sweating everything.

My friend and I have money to get an apartment as well as perfect credit, so I’m hoping to find a job so I can get an apartment somewhat close by.

If jobs werent a problem I would apts being looked into, but its kinda tough.

I’m sure a lot of you have been in a similiar situation and could at least help me out via advice if no leads.

I appreciate it, you guys have been nothing but good for me. Thank you.

Bryan

You could go to San Diego County and bootleg Century plant flower stalks, than sticker and stack for a year. In the mean time surf your brains out while pulling the agave hairs out of you skin. Watch out for those young rattlesnakes, they are feisty. Good Luck, and have fun on your search.

Oh, by the way, stay away from the newspaper stands in North Hollywood or you might find yourself the wrong kind of job.

I wish I could help more…

If you plan on putting that CE degree to use you can wave goodbye to a lot of surfing; expect to work long hours while getting rooted. My advise? Take the clichés out of your resume, add some personality, and send it around. The people who read these have read thousands, and key terms like “people skills” and “professionalism” have grown trite long ago. Show them your work experience, show them your degree, tell them where you want to go, and that’s it. If you want to fluff it up, do it by telling about who you are, and what you enjoy doing, at least then they know you’re being honest. A resume is not suppose to speak for you, it gets you in the door, the interview is where your winning personality is to shine. Also… If you’re going to claim you have excellent writting skills I would stray away from the sentence fragments.

The resume was just something typed up real quick and isnt really anything too too serious.

I’m not looking for a job where I utilize my degree at all at the moment. Basically I’m just looking for something that will get me income, 40 hours a week and give me enough money to pay rent, my car payment, and eat. This way I can surf too and do my shaping. Easy as that.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to work at a marina or something, but I have no clue how they hire or the process to go about that.

Todd Proctor, of Proctor Surfboards, was hiring glassers, sanders, and all the important finish detailers.

Ventura…

I think he has an ad on Swaylocks.

Thanks LeeDD. I’ll definately look into that, although I was hoping for something a bit more general  thanks again, and if anyone else knows of anything, dont be hesitant to let me know.

Hi, Brian check the santa barbara boatyard!! They surf, have fast boats for surf, work 200 yards from sandspit, plus unbelievable looking women everywhere!Another choice is ventura boatyards or channel islands boatyards!

I’ll second that. There is always work at the harbor sanding for the varnishers. It would take some leg work to get in the loop, but the rewards could be worth the time.

A few months ago, I heard that Scott Anderson (Aquatech - Glencoe Ave. in Marina Del Rey) was looking for a sander. I don’t know how reliable that info was but there is only one way to find out. Their tele# is listed (you can also get it with a Google search) but your best bet is to drop by there b/c they rarely answer the phone.

If you aren’t wed to the notion of working in a glassing shop, etc., you could always get a job waiting tables at night. Plenty of opportunities available in that area, plus you get tips in cash.

Also, have you tried tapping in to the Citadel alumni connection? I have seen a few Citadel stickers on cars in the LA area so I know there have to be a few grads out here. Isn’t the “alumni network” the reason (or at least the purported reason) that you pay an exhorbitant tuition only to put up with the hazing and other general b.s. for 4-years?

Folly Beach! Go Keydets!

Bryan,

When I moved to Maryland I got a job in a boatyard by begging the foreman for a job. Forget your pride, sir, sluts are always in need. Go to the yard, tell him your dream, get sentimental- avoid tears- and the kicker, tell him you’ll work for minimum wage. This increases your odds at least 75%.

I would tend to go the food service route- back of the house. The money is pretty good. If you work the dinner shift you don’t have to go in until 2 or 4PM, depending. That means you are left with alot of daylight to surf. If you’re serious try not to get sucked into the hedonistic restaurant lifestlye or you will certainly be sleeping until 2 in the afternoon.

Here is another suggestion, though it may mean living like a vampire. Take a job as a baker. Some of these jobs start at 1-4AM. BUT, you get out as early as 8 or 9AM. That leaves you the entire day to surf/shape. Grab your sleep before your shift and repeat.

I used to live in Imperial Beach and housing seemed alot cheaper down there than OB, PB, Cardiff, Oceanside, etc. Plus, it’s really close to Mexico.

Good Luck, don’t get panicky…

Damon

I would kill myself if I had to wait tables. Its just that…blah. ya know?

I would love working in a marina, but I wouldnt be able to do it for minimum wage. I would love being around boats and doing honest work all day, but when I wouldnt have enough to pay rent, it would kinda blow.

I’ve been sending my resume out everywhere, but to no real avail. It has only been a couple days tho, so maybe it’s not that bad.

As for the whole Citadel thing - it kind of works like that, but the further west you go - the less influence there is. Most people on the west coast havent even heard of the place…so its just like I went to a normal school.

basically, I need to find something where I can afford 4-500ish for rent and my car payment, and be able to live. So…yeah. I’m not sure minimum wage will cut it.

Im actually in the process of setting up and interview with Todd from Proctor surfboards.

the thing about working in a glass shop is that I dont mind the toxic work at all, but have a very limited experience glassing. however, I pick up VERY fast on things like that and its work i enjoy doing. so…hopefully that will help. I dunno.

I’m wanting to avoid doing the double job thing, like working at a marina AND a resteraunt or something like that. That would leave me with no time to enjoy California and completley defeat the purpose of me going anywhere.

I havent even surfed since Ive been over here :frowning:

Anyway…thanks a ton for anyones help, and I am totally into hearing any other suggestions or anything.

Basically, I am going to explore some marine or surfboard work first, then I’ll look into things like resteraunts and shoveling shit and stuff of that nature. If anyone has any leads, feel free to contact me. I’ll keep you guys posted, and thanks for being such a wonderful community.

Aloha

Bryan

Oh yeah Troy…

The “Keydets” are VMI, the Citadel spells it right and has “cadets.”

I wouldnt make that mistake around any alumn :stuck_out_tongue:

Howzit Bryan, haven't even surfed yet, well grab your board and paddle out. I'm sure that's one of the reasons for your move to ca. You might meet someone in the line up who is looking for an employee. Aloha, Kokua

Kokua is the best  brought a smile to my face just reading it. I’ll paddle out this weekend, maybe early next week sometime.

I would love for someone on these boards to maybe show me around or something

You have a degree in Civil Engineering. The LA market should be good. It is not going to be the dream surfing job you want but, it will pay alot better. A third of my graduatiing class got jobs with LA County or City. They have high turn over. If you get the right employer you can also have lots of surf time. If you didn’t pass the EIT or have a PE keep looking at those surf jobs or get a construction job.

The whole thing about CE is that its something I was very interested in when I began school, but lost interest and only stuck with it because I had already started on it.

It’s something I can do, and provides a great background - but being a contractor is something I’m just not interested in doing. I’m still young - I have time to find exactly what I want.

So I’m definately NOT wanting to start a career in CE. The whole CE thing will be a nice addition and background for whatever it is I find i want to do.

Thanks for the input though

Aloha
