just picked up an old lightning bolt

bought it from a dude that had it on display in his garden… it’s got a david nuuhiwa logo with “dyno” in it along with the lightning bolt logo. its 7’ 1", single fin with a winged swallow tail, blue tint with a cream pinline/lightning bolt combo. just wondering who might have shaped it, can’ quite make out the initials-- could be “RL”, or something… (definitely not “RB” for brewer, shucks) who all shaped for lightning bolt back in the 70’s, anyway? what’s up with both logo’s on the same board?

Rick McHale.

…Oh yeah,RL = Randy Lewis…Herb

Sounds VERY sweet man. I’m really not knowledgeable about lighting bolts, but on page 40 of Volume Eleven Number Two of TSJ, there’s a small clip about them and a nice shot of a lightning bolt quiver. Here’s a few quotes from that piece: “as soon as they landed in the islands, they went directly to Boscoe Burns or Steve Cranston to pick up their new quiver of bolts. Jack Shipley had teamed up with Gerry Lopez and had corralled many of Hawaii’s shapers under one roof…” “… you could go down the racks at Shipley’s bolt store in Honolulu and heck out the new lopez, BK, Abellira and Parrish shapes…” “… Rabbit would arrive in the Islands with minimal money, but a few days later, he’d be showing off his quiver of brand new Lightning Bolts shaped by Tom Parrish…” “… if you counted up the photos printed in surf mags with a Lightning Bolt logo and added up the name surfers who rode them, you’d find an accomplishment never equaled since…” Interesting history for sure. Sounds like you got a pretty cool find there.

RL- most likely Randy Lewis out of Huntington Beach.
