I am in the process of foiling a set of keel fins. I laid the fins up with somewhere around 20 - 24 layers of very saturated 6 oz cloth and they seem really thick. Does anyone have any advice on roughly how thick I should leave the fins at their thickest point? Like most things, I am sure that there are a number of factors that figure into the answer but I am just looking for a ballpark type of answer.
I am fairly big (6’1, 200-220 summer/winter) and I drive the board hard, so I want to minimize speed lost to flexing but at the same time minimize speed lost to fin drag.
The keels are single foil and I used the “standard” Fiberglass Fin Co. keel fins (which are MUCH thinner - they seem almost too thin for my tastes) as a template. If memory serves, they are between 7" and 8" base with about 4.5" to 5" height (sorry, I am at work right now so I don’t have them to measure).
Fins will be slightly toed.
Thanks.
