Keels for Dummies

I want to copy a keel fin off a favorite board. Do I just go buy some marine ply, cut it out with a jigsaw and go nuts with a sander or is there more involved?

Any online stores carry them?

I’m also interested in some links for online fin stores. Anybody got any?

E-bay might also be worth a look.

beetle,

Yes. I trace the fin onto a piece of paper or wood, clean up the edges, transfer template to 3/8 inch cabinet grade plywood(any type), then foil with an orbital sander. I wear a work glove and hold it in my hand. That sander will take a lot of skin off in a blink. There is a lot of info on grinding and making fins in the archives, too, and much better methods than mine. Mike
