Keep from griding into the paint

After you have finished glassing the bottom of the board and you have flipped it over to grind off anything that is not smooth, how do you keep from grinding into the paint on the foam if you have a board that is painted a solid color? I seem to always nick the darn thing and then I have to patch the paint. Then the paint never matches and you always notice the little touch up! Is there an easy way to prevent this? Thanks as always! http://members.cox.net/austinsurfboards.htm

you could try to tape around the spot and grind till you hit the tape…just a thought

You can take a small brush and paint a thin coat of lam resin over the lap mess. This fills in the bumps and makes sanding less of a hassle.I think that the biggest mistake that novice glassers make is overdoing the sanding.Remmember that you have two layers of glass and a hotcoat over the lap. This is an ongoing question around here but hang in there.
