Keep up the Artwork Thread

Here’s a pic of MR with some of his old classics. The Airbrush work is by Al Dove, an Hawaiian;- Thats all I know. Anybody know of Al?

The "Silver Surfer " board can be seen in MR’s shop in Newcastle.

Josh

YEEGADS, Speedy …you’re a mindreader now too !!!

I just this minute sent a pm to ‘Luke’, telling him I’d ‘resurrect’ that very thread, and I was about to post this very same photo !!!

amazing !! [insert 'twilight zone ’ music now !!]

…SHALL we keep THAT one going instead ? or start from scratch again ?

here’s one from the Legend Surf Museum [coffs harbour]. A pigment and tint job…

IF ( / when ?) I make another ‘stinger’ in future, this is the type of flame job I’d like on it. I’ll probably pick your brains on that , Josh ! [hope you don’t mind]…

" flame job " [very 70s Aipa ish…]

Am I seeing things, or do all those boards with the stinger tail break in half at the point where the stinger starts? Looks like the light colored board on the right broke in half at the middle.

Aside from the outstanding artwork, I think there are some design/strength considerations. Too thin? Stinger problem? Doug

aha !

… something not many who started surfing recently [well, since 1975 or so] may have seen, of course…the ‘step bottom’ !

Only a side [profile] shot would show what is going on there clearly…basically, a drop in thickness behind that line, thicker forward of that line.

If you can get hold of the video “many classic moments”, you will see this. Watch for ‘Buttons’ and Mark Liddell on the beach, [when the surf is flat] segment.

I DO have a photo of tom peterson’s [michael’s brother] “fireball fish” somewhere here . [it has a simiklar idea on the bottom]

I’ll see if I can find it for you Doug.

hope this helps…

*** here you go , Doug… found it !! a ‘step bottom’, of sorts :-

( a less radical drop in thickness than the stinger and a curved, instead of straight line , but this is the same concept, modernised 20 + years on from the Ben Aipa 1975- ? model…)

a Bill Wallace pigment job…

With many thanks to Andy, the awesome 60’s/70’s quiver man !!

(not filler coated , or sanded yet.)

The nose of the stub.

Orange ‘dupli colour’ [car spraypaint] acrylic , on the foam.

Green pigmented resin flicked [with brush] on top .

Then glassed.

[The bottom of the board is red]

unintentional assymetrical nose.

speaking of M.R.'s sprays…

Chipfish, Thanks for the clarification. I’ve never heard of a step-bottom. Stingers have so much release in the tail already…those boards must have been Really loose. Doug

no worries Doug !

Yep, a mate who rode one with a step bottom found it TOO loose for him. Eventually , the step bottom disappeared in later models.

now, some more hot buttered Marty Worthington sprays…

wow man…outtasight !!
