I know a lot of you don’t follow the contest scene, and I don’t generally either, but I’ve been tuning in for a lot of the Billabong Pro Tahiti.
Kelly is always exciting to watch, competing against guys half his age, saw him get a 10 on one wave yesterday. But today he got two 10’s in one heat! His surfing is so strong and confident, just amazing!
I think a discussion is in order of what he was riding vs. the other surfers in the contest. His was a pretty dominant performance. That air drop to barrel in the final was insane. Most of us mere mortals would have been vaporized on the reef, but he’s pulling straight into the barrel like it was nothing!
I’m surfed boards with wings and bumps and boards with a good outline and hard rails in the tail. I’ll prefece this next statement with, I’m not a great surfer but I’m pretty darn competent. I think wings are very overrated. Perhaps if I were putting boards on rail in serious islands juice I might very well have a different opinion. But I never found that ‘next gear’ or extra snappy turns. And with that said, I put soft wings on my winter NJ board just behind the leading fins. I hope I eat my words.
I tried wings on a winged swallowtail quad kinda like a Rusty Big Cat shape and I liked 'em, I thought they made the board turn better than a similar shape I have without them.
