Keola Rapoza or Greg Griffin board?

Hey guys,

Anybody knows whether he really designed the 9.2 HP longboard by surftech, or whether it was Griffin, G.?

I ask, because i thought Griffin was all about concaves in the tail, but then again, Griffin might use his channels in the nose…

Anyhow, any input?

ha-ha-ha

you should ask chandler about keola…

but be ready for a good one…

I think Keola’s the production manager at Homeblown with Ned these days…

Oh yeah

ask Chandler about the need for a concaved bottom too…

and be ready for another long one…

I don’t know enough about the board you’re talking about, but greg had some very complicated bottoms on his longboards. He showed Oneula and I the multi-plane bottom and it had 4 planes with very subtle changes from rail to rail and nose to tail. You need good straight edge to see that the bottom wasn’t flat. I think McCoy’s Nuggets are similar, the bottom is very complex, but some of it so subtle that you may not notice it without a good straight edge.

I don’t think Greg likes concave bottoms, but he did all kinds of channels, nose channels instead of concaves, and up to 6 channels in the tail. I think the nose channels are something that he started at T&C.

My take on boards is that once a shape gets into a company’s 3D machine, the shape becomes anyone’s to finish. Guys like Griffin that have worked for large shops have had their shapes put into those shop’s shaping machines. I’ve seen several outlines and fin setups that were unique to Griffin but on boards with other shapers names.

There’s a lot of subtle stuff going on that the experience guys like Griffin have has taught them. It sets their boards apart from others. In Griffin’s case, the whole board concept is something that I don’t see from others. His fins and fin placement are as important as the rails, bottoms, plan shapes, profile and rocker. I haven’t met many shapers that are as picky about this concept as he is. Probably why you don’t see a lot of people making 5 fins boards like his.

So even if the board was “borrowed” from a Griffin design, it’s not going to be the same as a board with Griffin’s name on it. The same would apply for guys like Aipa who’ve been making boards for more than 3 decades.

The surftech shape was made by Keola

greg,

what a pity.

otherwise i could know what your shapes surf like.

I can’t personally vouch for Greg’s longboards…because my friend loves his so much he never let’s me ride it. My buddy has to buy used boards (economics thing) but he has always surfed Greg’s T&C hi performance long boards. Usually 9’0" and usually about 2 5/8 thick. He surfs them all over the North Shore, on all sizes of surf. Yes they break (back to the economic thing) But he swears by them, he’s a very good surfer for an old guy. You should get one too.
