Kinetix R104 Vs Kinetix R110

Hey all! I’ve been lurking here for a while, in the middle of making my second board (5’6" balsa-EPS compsand), and are about a week away from being ready to glass. I still have some Kinetix R104 epoxy left over from my first board, which I think may just be enough to laminate and maybe hotcoat my current board. However, I’ll definitely have to buy more for board #3 (9’2" longboard). I just noticed Shapers Aust now have R110 which is meant to be whiter, brighter, and cures faster than R104. Should I stick with what I know (R104) or give R110 a shot? I did each side of the lamination of my first board (5’10 HWS fish) in about 15 minutes, and didn’t have any issues, but if R110 is significantly faster than R104, I don’t want to get into any trouble midway through the lamination.

So, if anyone has tried Kintetix R110, what did you think? Any noticable difference to R104?

Cheers
Paul

Hey Paul,

I've used the R104 for a few years now and have just recently switched to the Resin Research quick kick. Both resins are very good. The quick kick is much better for production due to the faster curing. For bagging it is great because you dont need the board in the bag for hours.

Your best bet is to ring ATL composites who manufacture Kinetix and ask them what sort of pot life and cure time the R110 has. Ask them about yellowing as it seems the faster hardeners tend yellow much quicker and not be as clear. Which seems to be something Resin research has worked out so maybe the Kinetix R110 is onto the same thing.

Good Luck.

Thanks Darren. I just looked up the ATL website for their datasheets. The biggest differences I can see is that the R110 has a 20min pot life compared to a 25min pot life for R104, and that the viscosity of R110 is about 50% greater than R104 (sounds similar to what people have been saying about KK). The R110 also seems to cure at slightly lower temps. The vague and subjective description of resistence to yellowing is the same for both.

Datasheets are here if anyone is interested:
   R104: http://www.atlcomposites.com.au/files/epoxy_products.laminating.kinetix__r104_surfboard/kinetix_r104_surfboard.pdf
   R110: http://www.atlcomposites.com.au/files/epoxy_products.laminating.r110_surfboard/kinetix_r110_surfboard.pdf

So basically I don’t think it will make any difference at my level of glassing! Maybe I’ll give the R110 a crack and report back!

Hey Daren

Been a while.

Where did you get your RR from???

I tried for so long a year or so ago with no luck.

If you have switched it must be readilly available now.

As for the R110, might have to look into it.

Geez, I've only been out of it for a short while and have fallen so far behind already.

Funny thing though, been getting the bug back.

Haven't told the wife yet, she wont be happy

Cheers

Hey Mick,

I got the RR from the guys on the Goldy. Gave them a call and they couldn't be more helpful. A far cry from the guy who is supposed to be the local importer and rep for Gregs resin. I called them and the resin was here over 1000km away within two days.

I like the kinetix stuff but the quick kick is much better for bagging and production for hand layups. Incredible flip times in temps over 20 degrees.

Building surfboards is better than going to the pub or betting on the nags so I dont think it's such a bad addiction to have.

Just tell the missus this is your creative outlet.... or some shit.

If you just want to try a bit of the RR qiuck kick just let me know and I'll hook you up.

Yer I'm hearin ya Daren

But I don't mind a beer now and then and I just converted my shaping shack into a music room.

Was going to rebuild an old EH but went for the music instead

I now have guitars, piano, a production level PA in there and now looking at drums.

Spent a fair bit already.

But, have made sure to leave enough room in the garage for shaping (just in case)

I will definately take you up on that offer too when the time comes.

Been wanting to try RR for a long time.

Anyway, I'm high jacking the thread

Kinetics 104 is a very good epoxy

I have built a SUP and a 9'0" longboard with 104 and are both going strong 18 months later.

Havent tried the 110 though but there doesn't seem to be much of a differents
