The three best kneeboard builders in the world happen to be Australian - check out Parkes Australia, Flashpoint by Bruce Hart and Island by Neil Luke. Your search is over and you don’t even have to pay freight and duties to buy from the US…
The good (only) US kneeboard shapers are :
John Mel of Freeline in Santa Cruz, CA
Dean Cleary
Ron Romanosky (sp?)
and a guy by the name of Bud in Hawaii with the Blast label
and one other guy in So. CA (can’t think of his name now).
Thats about it. Makes it a lot easier to choose a kneeboard than a surfboard (too many shapers and labels).
PM me and I’ll hook you up with a reputable kneeboard shaper in Opunake, NZ - the capital of NZ kneeboarding (over 6 kneeboarders live in the area!). I’d recommend Brian’s boards and his location is right. Also helps to have local help in finding waves (over electrified fences, across paddocks and down cliffs!)
Otherwise you could get one of mine (new or used) or a Stump www.Stumpsurf.com (Stumps are being ridden by several top kneeboarders) but we’re based in Vic, Australia - a bit of a paddle from Gisborn!
Hart, Parkes, Lukey are all well known, but likewise based in Australia (Sydney, Byron, Vic).

PS I’ve heard that shinfins don’t work, so it would be interesting to hear your feedback.
Hi John, I was going to reply to Simon and tell him about Parksy and maybe Neil Luke, was’nt sure if he was still going, both of those guys are more than solid, you beat me to it, they are a dying breed , the knee boarders. Parksy has won a shit load of Australian titles, I think Neil has at least one if not more. I saw Parksy tear up Sunset in 78’ on a 6’0" ‘gun’ really, Shaun was dominating, Banksy was standing out and so was Parksy, in the biggest and most crowded surf I’d ever seen up to that point, cheers H. Good luck Simon, hope you have a great trip.
not true, mate - just core and underground. Numbers are on the up again.
One day quik and bbong will pick up the niche and promote it as 'alternative, core" or whatever else they can to sell more product (RIP bodyboarding, long live women’s surfing).
OK enough raving.
One benefit of being small in numbers and underground by choice is protection from the mass produced boards problems the standup surf industry has. Downside is no-one makes a living shaping kneeboards. I just try to make the whole effort self-liquidating (a new board for me every couple of months).
Another aside:
Lukey runs the LONGEST RUNNING PRO SURFING EVENT in Australia, if not the world. His Phillip Island Kneeboard Classic turned 27 last year, and is a credit to him and the support he gets from Island Surf. (the Bells comp has had a lot of name changes in that time)
Good to see, I meant no offence, say hello to Lukey for me, you are obvously are a kneeboarder, I grew up with them at Dee Why, and you guys would want it no other way, you are decidely different, cheers H.
