I just use the jig I made. To bad nobody makes fin box jigs for sale.I guess there’s just not enough demand to warrant making them. Do you use a jig or just freehand them? The jig I have is one I made out of wood a few years back . I made one out of metal when I was on the mainland last year only to find that my room mate gave me the wrong dimentions for the length. $45.00 down the drain. Aloha, Kokua

i use a jig made out of 1/4" sanded plywood. i use a template routing bit. cuts with a bearing ring around so it’s nice and smooth through the jig. how do you guys deal with the stringer? cutting it out seems a little rough. especially when chips get caught in the routed box.

Just blow the chips out of the box after each pass of the router. Your router should cut through the stringer with no problem. Not sure about your jig, does the router base set inside the jig or just the bit bearing? Aloha, Kokua

the base sits above the jig. the bit drops into the jig with the bearing running along flush inside. this allows a 1" depth cut. i will go back and drop the depth a little, about a 1/16"–1/8"…depending on the board. i have a ???..say i want to install a fin box, but the tail is a little thin. can i sand down the bottom of the box to squeeze it in?

You’ld be better off shimming up the rear of your jig. The bottom of the box is only about 3/16" thick. Aloha, Kokua
