Kauai Officials Urge Residents To Evacuate; 7 Missing

POSTED: 11:05 am HST March 14, 2006 UPDATED: 2:09 pm HST March 14, 2006

HONOLULU – Kauai authorities are telling people to evacuate parts of the north shore after a dam breached, sweeping away possibly seven people, and another dam is threatening to be compromised.

Kaloko Reservoir in Kilauea breeched and overflowed onto Kuhio Highway wiping out about 100 yards of the road. Vehicles are unable to pass in either direction.

The water swept two homes off their foundations.

The Coast Guard has found the body of one person so far.

Teams from multiple agencies are working to find seven other people reported missing after the dam was overrun.

The Kaloko Dam burst leaving a 250-hole in it after heavy rains pounded the area overnight, causing flooding on an already saturated island, and closing roads on the Garden Isle’s north shore.

The Kauai Fire Department called on the U.S. Coast Guard to help with the search for seven people who may have been swept away when water plunged over the dam. Officials dispatched a C-130 search plane and a helicopter to look for the missing people in the Kilauea Stream, which feeds into Kilauea Bay.

The Coast Guard Cutter Washington has left Honolulu to join the efforts.

Officials opened Kilauea Neighborhood Center and Kula School as shelters for those who need to evacuate on the North Shore.

Morita Reservoir near Kilauea is also in danger of breaching. Officials have evacuated residents on Kapuu Road to Kalaheo Neighborhood Center. They also urged residents living near Waikomo Stream and low-lying areas to evacuate to the center as well.

State transportation director Rod Haraga said teams are first working to shore up Morita Reservoir before working on Kuhio Highway.

County officials also want residents to conserve water after a water main along Wailapa Road broke.

KITV has crews on the Garden Isle and will bring you reports on the newscasts at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Officials closed Kuhio Highway between Hanalei and Princeville early Tuesday morning. Crews also closed the highway at Wailapa Road, east of Kilauea. Kauai County Civil Defense says the nearby Waiakalua Reservoir overflowed mauka of the highway.

On Oahu, emergency personnel said they had to help evacuate a home in Hauula on Kamehameha Highway near Naniloa Loop after it became flooded early Tuesday morning. Most of the Koolauloa area of Windward Oahu from Kahuku south to Waikane was under an urban and small stream flood advisory early Tuesday, but the advisory was cancelled at 7:30 a.m. Any rainfall here has the potential for flooding, as the area is still saturated from torrential downpours at the beginning of March.

The threat of heavy rainfall may remain with us for the rest of the week. Tuesday’s rainfall will be mainly for Kauai and Oahu, but some of those showers may continue eastward to Molokai, Lanai and Maui. Southeast portions of the Big Island in the Hilo, Puna and Kau districts, also may see heavier showers. Rainfall is expected to ease off a little on Friday and into Saturday, but scattered showers are still in the forecast.

Here are some 12-hour rainfall totals ending Tuesday at 11 a.m. (in inches):

Thanks Bernie,

www.kauaiworld.com has breaking news on the first page as well.

Glad to hear Kokua is o.k. I hope his friends and family are well.

Howzit SrPato, I am OK but we are now cut off from the rest of the island and have no idea when the road will be reopened due to the road being badly damaged. Here in Haena things are OK and we didn’t get all that much rain last night and I actually went to work today. The main problem we have now is with the road closed there’s no way for any provisions to be delivered to us so there has been some panic buying, but what cracks me up is people are buying bottled water as if that’s a problem. Another problem is it’s supposed to rain all week and that could cause more damage. Just heard on the TV news that another storm is on the way and will hit on Sunday, better start on the Ark. Aloha,Kokua

Hola Kokua,

Glad you’re OK. Let’s hope they get that road fixed ASAP. It’s not a good feeling being cutoff from your daily provisions. Been there! Regarding the next storm, it’s a good thing that you’ve got a healthy supply of “personal flotation devices” nearby.

Hang in there

Marc

Howzit SrPato, Thanks for the concern and we don't know when the road will reopen due to another dam just below the broken one is indanger of breaking and they aren't going to open the road til they are sure things are OK with that dam.I have enough provisions to last me 3 or 4 days but I am going to the market and see what's left after yesterdays panic buying. We just hope they let the beer truck through. Aloha,Kokua

well is it mango season?(bad pidgin to da max reference)

Hopefully you can get more provisions…local news says more rain on the way for you guys.

supposed to clear up a bit Sat but hammer again late Sun-Mon

Hopefully they’ll get the road back up by then.

Funny that they can’t shuttle in supplied by helicopter if its truly needed since they seem to have no problem shuttling the tourist in and out of Princeville so they can catch their planes home and get out of the rain…

Major chocolate water

dead critters and

big feasting tigers over on your side.

Major toilet flush into the eastside water from the overflowing sewage plants over here…

So sad about those that got wiped out forever and our fingers are crossed that the Morita Dam holds as they try and relieve the pressure.

Take care
