Kwik kick = NO KICK

I just shot a hot coat with kwik kick, weighed my mixture (2 to 1), stirred for greater than 1 minute. 1 1/2 hours later, still not kicking. Laminate was done with Green room epoxy. Epoxy in bucket is not kicking either.

What now?!

This is my tenth board this year using epoxy - roughly 50 mixes (I do 1 layer at a time) - I'm confident in my ratio and mixing. Any ideas??

I know humidity can effect epoxy but I don't think that much.  What are you mixing and measuring the resin in?

2 to 1 is VOLUME not Weight. Looks like you did weight. I just did a lamination and two hot-coats today with Kwick Kick bought at Greenlight. No problems. Did it inside at 72 degrees and flipped in about an hour and a half.

Are you SURE you used resin and hardener, not just one of them? Stranger things have happened. Usually, if you're off on your percentage, you'll still get a kick, just won't cure all the way. If it didn't kick at all, mix another small batch and see how that goes.

Thanks surfthis.

I eyeballed the 2 original containers and they look like the ratio is correct. Certain that this did not occur.

I was considering doing the small batch. I'll do this now and report back.

I just mixed 8 grams resin, 4 grams hardener, 8:05.

Let's see what happens with this batch.

8:41

First batch done at around 6:30 still no gelling at all.

Test batch from 8:05 no evidence of gelling either.

Will keep you informed.

What next??!

should be hard by now... isn't it?

oops , we wrote at the same moment :)

9:05

Test batch is not gelling either. Just as viscous as fresh. Hot coat on board not gelling.

both the resin and the hardener are labeled Kwik Kick?

you’re not trying to combine KK with 2010 or something…right?

Just bought the kit from Greenlight. First time using RR. Resin is in a container twice the size of the hardener.

Thanks afoaf, but this can be ruled out.

9:30

Hot coat is starting to gel. Leftover resin in bucket is thickening, but would still be workable if using on the board, after 3 hours.

The test batch shows no sign of thickening after 1.5 hours.

2:1 by volume is what I use for mixing(I’ve read that the ratio is different when mixing by weight),I’ve never had a problem with any epoxy. The kwik kick epoxy is blueish, the hardener has a yellow tint.

I was concerned about the volume and weight ratios being different. Went to the RR website and all the information I could find (including on the bottles) was "2 parts resin, 1 part hardener". I am diligent with measuring and mixing and have never had a problem before.

Oh well, it is only a surfboard, it's not like I'm saving lives.

What's the temp where you're at?

Va. Bch. 85 degree sweatbox garage.

Yea,I would try mixing a small batch 2:1 by volume and check your results.I did some touch ups on a recent build this evening at 80 degrees, tack free in an hour.I bought the epoxy from greenlight a few weeks ago.I did mix a batch once and spilled a bunch of adF in the mix on accident and used it anyway, the epoxy took twice as long to cure and I was freaking the #### out man.

guys…I’m using KK to do repairs TONIGHT and always measure by weight…not likely the issue if he did it 2:1

Every problem I have had with epoxy was my fault, hot coat with un-gelled streaks, didn’t mix it completely, lamination went off in some spots not in others, I had measured out both parts, poured them together and the phone rang, when I got back to the batch I poured it on the board without mixing. Sealer coated my son’s board with 2 parts hardner to 1 part resin, tried to recoat and super squeegee the mixes together, the board delam’d as soon as it got warm the first time.

Other than that, as long as I follow directions, it works every time and they call me a genius
