i saw a gallon of some clear lacquer in home depot the other day. it’s for sealing up wood, cabinets, etc…i also think paul or herb posted something about it. you can brush it on or spray. it was only $15. could this be used as a clear coat on a board, instead of using clear acrylic? maybe a little stronger??
When you talk about sealing a board, you are talking about sealing the finished product, right? What exacting are you sealing? Doesn’t the glass and resin make it water tight? (Teddy: the water is 47 today, 3 more degrees and I am back in, did you hear someone drown at 8th street, OC, on Sunday. Apparently he was the first one out and was found by another surfer) Frank
H2O fxk, I’ve been watching the temps increase myself…all I know is at this time last season we had 54-56 degree temps. That was nice!! I’ve been dry since November, It sucks!!! As far as the unfortunate happenings in Ocean City. I just read about it from a link on: http://www.chaindriver.com/njsf/ I wonder if he got hit by his own board. Its a damn shame! I surf in central Jersey, I take it your an east coaster as well? I know nothing about Lacquer…sorry. Kev
Kevin; I am from South Jersey, according to the paper here there were no signs of any type of trauma. It is a shame, he was also a lifeguard in Delaware. I’ve been out of the water since November too. I can’t wait to get back in. Frank
Yea I rarely surf below Strathmere, If I’m in South Jersey I hit one the piers in O.C. Ever since the beach replenisment In Strathmere it’s been pretty weak (one of my favs though). Although it might be worth a check after the rough winter we had. Anyways…Bring on the warm water!!! K
yeah, i heard about that. it’s a shame…hopefully it’s a safe season. death always kills the mood…can’t wait to get back in, got plenty of new toys to use…any help for the lacquer???
Please, just tell me why you don’t surf in the winter? The surf is usually great and there is this new invention called wetsuits you know. Nuff said. regards, Håvard
People do surf here in the winter. The water usually gets into the 30’s (F) and the surf is better here during the winter months. In my youth I surfed all year but I guess I got a little soft with age. Now I only go out if the water is above 50, which is about May through November. What’s the water tempeture range where you are? Frank
I’m located in the southwest of Norway. We have pretty much the same temps although it seldom drops much below 40F. If I was to surf only may to november, that would meen only about 3 month of OK surf, since may through august is usually crappy, onshore mess. Even september through november didn’t really happen this year, but we had a great winter. If you want to surf in the winter, get a top of the line winter suit, 6/5/4, hood, gloves, boots. Get a custom suit if you can, make sure it fit well if you don’t, to avoid flushing. Zipperless if you can, drawstring in the hood, all to avoid flushing. Lobster mitts are exellent. Last thing, bring some warm(not hot) water to fill the wetsuits with before you paddle out, thus you won’t have to warm up the cold water that get into the suit. With good weather, ie. sunny and calm, but cold (32F air, 40F water) I can usually stay out for two-three hours plus without getting too cold, but that’s with a 5/4 zip wetsuits but with a hooded west. Whatever you do, good luck. And best of waves in the summer too. regards, Håvard
Howzit Teddy, One thing I’ve learned about lacquer is the cheap stuff will yellow and the expensive won’t. I was quoted $25.00 a gal. for the cheap and $100.00 a gal for the good. I seal my boards with a silicone grout sealer and have had good results.Aloha, Kokua
