Lam lap and cheater coat question

one trippy thing about my cheater coat… I like it, won’t have to put any more glue on the deck or bottom, but where the rails lapped, and I basted on plenty glue… it seemed it wouldn’t build up beyond the weave, so I have a nice shiny smooth coat right up to the line of the cut lap then weave???

Data: 2x6oz, RR epoxy “slow” hardner.

Any thoughts?

it must be the Coriolis effect… you need to build an offset into your glassing racks. Ha!

Too slow would be my guess, it ran off the most vertical weave before curing.

post a pic…if you can.

The cheater coat should be on the flats, up to the lap line. Little if any resin is needed on the actual lapped cloth.

Keith - Hmmmnchhhh (nose laugh…) I’ll order some right away! Ha!

SurfinHigh - Could be, but I do a big fat lap (I’m a firm believer in the added strength benefits.), so there are definitely “flat areas” on both side of the rails.

nj - Probably not gong to happen on this one, as I’m more intent on finishing the board then I am on getting my lame dig.cam. working… but who knows, maybe I’ll take a picture and post some other moon… …

I don’t know if other do it, but I’ve been adding a slight bevel on the bottom side of the board to compensate for the double layer of glass that will wrap around from the deck.

I have been doing the slight bevel on the bottom edge as the final step in blank preperation. Seems less of a factor on boards with a rounded edge. Makes the most difference on harder edge places like the tail. I still do a little cheater up to the edge of the lap. I don’t wrap both layers all the way to the bottom. The inner layer stops mid rail or higher. I just assumed most shapers were doing the slight bevel even though I haven’t heard it mentioned.

Did just that exact thing on this board, as I figured it’d be easier to take a little foam off, than to sand down all that crap later…

Worked great.

I like to wrap all the layers I can: One, I like as much rail “protection” as I can get. Two, it is my understanding the compound curves on the rails add much to the boards overall strength. Three, based on my loose interpretation of the WMD thread; “heavy rails are good,” so I’ve thought about adding extra cloth on the rail only… But for now I’ll stick w/four layers of 6oz all the way around.
