Laminating 3 layers

im about to laminate a longboard with epoxy with 4+4+3/4 deckpatch on the deck and was wondering how should the cloth be cut? Should only the top layer wrap around the rail?I was thinking about cutting the first 2 layers about the halfway point on the rail and free lapping the last layer. Is this right?

For a longboard, especially with four ounce, I would cut the patch further down the rail, cut the second layer to lap under an inch or more, and the final lap two or more inches. Economising on laps with four ounce on longboards is not a good idea.
