laminating carbon without bagging

Hey guys

Been making epoxy/eps boards for a few years but never done a full carbon board before - I have been given some box weave carbon that feels light enough to use for the bottom and wrap the rails - was thinking of a big freelap, then baste and feather the carbon into the deck…next I have my eye on on some coloured carbon but its REALLY stiff so I’m thinking of doing a full deck panel…now here’s the big question - would you recomend doing the carbon deck panel to a cut lap first OR would you lam a clear layer over the carbon bottom and to a cut lap on the deck before laying the blue carbon deck panel…obviously the deck panel will have another full (probably 6oz) layer that I intend to freelap.

Cheers

Carbon is a weird devil. It sucks resin like carpet. Your board could turn out heavier than you wanted.

I’d lam the deck first. Free lap. Then do the bottom, cut lap. Layer the tape thick for the cut lap, so you can see it under the carbon.

Spread a thin coat of past of resin+cabosil then lay and press the carbon on this, it’ll glue cloth, prelam it under, and avoid it to drink to much resin when you lam over. For cut lap put two layer of masking tape of different color, let cure and sand above, when you see first layer of tape you are happy to have a second one under then you are happy again to see a perfect cutlap. Be carreful carbon powder is shit, really thin, light and spead everywhere, need lot of vacuum cleaner job.
