lammin with kwik kik

First timer with RR kwik kik and love it, flippin times, odor, and workability is just like advertised, my problem was i used more than 2+ ounces per foot of board and seems extreme to me. the resin seemed a bit thicker than others, @ 73*f  i had plenty of pot life, 5’5’’ 16-20-16 , 2lb stringerless and spackled, 3 sixes, one bottom and 2 deck and both of the sixes wrapped the rail for strength, 3’’ carbon/glass tape in place of the stringer,1% F for total mixtures,  it feels a tad heavy but strong in the flex dept. I feel like we pulled a fair amount of resin out of the lam and any more was gonna make it dry,. Is carbon heavy? Lighten up on the glass?Pull out more resin? next board is 10’6 and cant afford a drum of this stuff… any suggestions from the epoxy gurus here? thanks in advance

I’ve lammed about 30 boards with KK so I’m no pro, but I always default to a little over 2 oz per foot. Like for a 6’0" x 20" with wide nose and tail and single 4 oz I’ll mix 15 oz total and use most of it with little waste on the floor and a tight lam. I think the 2 oz per foot rule applies to HP shortboards with narrower nose/tails. For double 4 oz top I’ll go with 18 oz on same board and again, little waste.

I found KK stiffer but less resilient than 2000CE. I found board build with 2000 more resistant than with KK. The last two board snap were made with KK.

thanks, Jamie, If I read you right, your glassing single 4 bottom and double 4 decks. maybe i need to look at glass schedules for 2lb foam but yesterday id say that’s too light. . the 3 sixer board is off to Nicaragua this am and its lookin juicy there.

thanks lemat… 2000 is more viscous… but the kk has a very comfy exotherm in boxes… its there but no where near violent.

kk pulled me on board with kick times…i work full time and slower resin gets only 1 step per night, then  poly wins with me

Mike

For me 2000 is less viscous than KK, and you can lightly hot it so it’s became really fluid with a nice set time. But more important lam with 2000 take a bit more energy to break than lam with KK (test with a mouton sharpy laboratory test machine). That can increase board durability.

2x4oz + 4oz on 2lb EPS is for a disposable board (in real waves) !.

Sorry for my franglish

How does it compare to poly (silmar 249 if you have that as reference)?

I don’t test poly on mouton sharpy, need to do. I have silmar that i use for gloss. I stop tested poly (on pu) quickly in my search when i do the hamer test, no fight. Not really a scientific gait, i recognized.

When I do single 4 bottom double 4 top, it’s with a PU blank. (My personal favorite at the moment: epoxy over PU). I get normal pressure dents but rarely get cracks/dings/delams with this layup.

So for an 2lb EPS blank you’d probably want to go 6-8 oz glass total on the bottom and 8-12 oz glass total on the top.
