laps, freelaps, cutlaps....

Can someone just do a quick sum up/definition for these. I am in the middle of searching the terms as well. I know the laps are the overhang of cloth, but a little elaboration would be appreciated.

laps

are when strippers dance in your lap

freelaps

she doesnt charge you

cutlaps

your off your face on some substance at the time

Free laps: you drape your glass on the blank, cut it the best you can so the laps will be approximately the same size on each rail (usually more or less 2") then you pour resin and laminate.

Cut-laps: you start by taping off the deck right where the cut will be (still usually 2"). Then you turn the blank around, drape the glass, cut it so that the lap will reach a little over the masking tape, then laminate. When it gels, you turn the board and cut along the masking tape with a razor blade. This gives a neat lap and it’s used when doing tinted layers because it has to stop neatly. Also when using tint on both sides, the double layer on the rail will show darker so it needs to be regular. Using volan cloth compels to cut-lap too, for the same reason. (volan cloth has a greenish shade and multiple layers show darker, whereas silane cloth, which is the usual finish nowadays, is completely clear and thus can be free-lapped without showing).

I thought someone might have left out an “n”…

I think they left out an “n” for sure and possibly an “f”

???, are there a couple other types of laps not mentioned here?? n and f??? You lost me.

I’m afraid I didn’t catch it, either… Any clue?

Think outside of the box. More like around the “box”.

I think I got an idea of what the heck the n is for but I won’t acknowledge it.

Lap is a general description of the overLAP on the rail between the bottom and deck cloth.

Free and cut are specific types of laps. See balsa’s excellent description.

To simplify, free means the edge falls freely where it will, cut means the edge is cut once it’s in place to control the edge location.
