Nothing new or particularly inspirational about this But I’m totally buzzing on it, and desperately trying to get it finished before the end of the month.
Its a 5’10" fish made from oak and sapele faced ply (again), had some left over from the last board. The plan shape was based loosely on some dimensions which Lob posted here a couple of years back…Cheers stacks et merci beucoup Lob! The method is an adaptation of Paul Jensen’s with a few ideas from Rich Blundell thrown in for good measure.
I’m almost to the point where I can finish shape the rails and add the nose wedge I’ve made for it (Cherry and maple).
I like what I see. Would like to know more. A lot more!! What is the thickness of your plywood, where did you get it? Is your deck flat from rail to rail or do you have some crown in it? How about the bottom, any V in it? Did you glass the inside of the deck and bottom skin or are you just glassing the outside ? Do you have a vent plug? what kind of glue did you use to glue down your skins? What kind of material did you use on your rail glue up? Aloha, and thanks! Wood_Ogre
The deck is flat from rail to rail, mainly so that I can keep the board fairly short without it sinking under my enormous weight!!! There is a slight amount of v in the tail, this was pre-shaped into the frame, about 3/8" higher mid point than at the rail. The deck and bottom ply is 4mm and the internal frame is a stringer with ribs placed every 6" and a single layer of ply for an internal rail all cut from 4mm ply, I’ve figured out a way of doing these which I find much better (I’ll try and find some pics of this if I can later). Its all glued together using PVA wood glue, with little blocks on every edge to increase glueing surface. The whole thing feels way more solid than the others I’ve built. The rails are cork and ply layered, stuck with contact adhesive, I’d love to find a better way of doing the rails as I always struggle layering it all up and usually have to cut out and re-position sections when it comes to shaping them. (including this one).
Its quite thick at 2 3/4" and with it being flat between the rails really shows it.
Mate if you’re after some cherry I could mail you some for nose blocks or fin wedges. I may have some beech aswell, I might even find some mahogony if I sort out my garage. The last of my maple has plans.
I do the same, ask for samples of flooring but the geezer who promised to get me the iroko, tulip wood and cocobola hasn’t happened yet. My dad found me the cherry on a site he was working at a couple of years back, not much of that left now.
Just normal ply for everything…wouldn’t even know where to get bending ply from.
Have you still got the name and number of the timber merchants you got your teak ply from?
Cheers for the offer mate much appreciated, don’t won’t to deprive you though, but I’ll give you a bell if there is anything specific for a project I can’t get hold of here. Maybe we could trade for some 5 or 10mm bamboo? which I’ll be getting soon for my next project.
Maybe catch you down Saunton some time, I’ll be in Gwithian this weekend
