layers over balsa

i have put some balsa stripe inlays into a longboard how much glass should go over it a normal 2x6oz. thanks paul

To start with, paint a coat of resin along the sides of the of the strips to help soften the “step” between the foam and wood, also a cheater caost on the wood to stop delam or gassing. After that, a normal lam of 6/6 or 6/4 will suffice

Sorry for the obviously dumb question, but I often see the term “CHEATER COAT” especially used when talking about adherence with balsa. Can you let me know what cheater coat is. I can only deduce that it may mean a thinned brushed on coat of resin prior to laying the glass on?? Thanks much for some light here?

Let’s not call it a “CHEATER COAT”… I’ve done the wood board thing for a couple of years now, and from now on I’m gonna paint on an “Insurance Coat”… Insurance against a non bonding glass job, or major areas delaminating after several days…I vow to never again be forced to strip off a half-soft deck lam… Whatever you call it it just makes sense, with wood to pre-seal it before glassing… Paul http://www.hollowsurfboards.com

It`s always a good idea to pre-seal the wood (anything much wider than common stringer width) before glassing. Slow cure and low viscosity of resin are helpful in thorough sealing of wood.

so what sort of mix resin, cat, wax? are we talking? how slow do you want it to kick?

Common stringer whith being 1/4" or less ? So any stringer wider than what should be per glassed. Thanks in advance, long live Swaylock’s,Brian.
