learning the hard way...is it ruined?

Shaping number 2, which I must say is a lot easier after watching Shaping 101. Unfortunately, I have 2 problems that I don’t know if they can be fixed. I’m doing a 6’6" round pintail with EPS. I decided to try a method that was posted on here and so I used epoxy to bond the sheets(2"+1") together with a 6" wide fiberglass stringer running the full length of the board. Problem 1 - there were a couple of places that hadn’t bonded along the edges of the rough blank, but when I cut the rough outline it all seemed tight. However, as you can see in the first pic, one spot along the rail delamed. Should I squirt some epoxy in the void and press it back together or will it just be okay once I put the fiberglass on? Problem 2 - In sanding the bottom side of the tail down, I hit the bonding seam and now the fiberglass stringer is protruding out from the foam. I cut about a foot of the stringer off and tried sanding it down but its not working too good and looks like shit as you can see in the pic. Is this a spackle situation? Is it even fixable? Can I just glass it anyway and have an ugly flaw in the bottom or is it going to create a glassing problem?

All help mucho appreciated as usual!

HH,

Try and squirt a little epoxy in the first one and weight it down. The second one I would run the planer across it(the width of the board…)at the minimal depth setting to try and get it flush. They may show but build and ride that sucker anyway…you won’t make the same mistake twice…good luck and have fun…

Both easy fixs, only cosmetic.

  1. yes, tape it shut, I’d use Elmers or non set.

  2. scissors cut the fiberglass as far in as possible, fill with spackle.

Most epoxystyro boards get painted opaque anyways, hiding the seams and flaws really well.

Really nice shape so far.

Thanks guys. Glad to hear its fixable because I am pretty happy with the shape.

I was planning on going with the “no seal” route so as not to bother with spackle, microballons or whatever. Should I just hit the whole blank with white paint after I repair it? One coat of Latex or Acryllic? It’ll be epoxy finished.

I remeber your first boards posting, did you ever glass it and ride it or was it just to try it.

I have one more to make for now and was planning on glassing them all at the same time.
