learning to shape

hi im new to this forum and must say it seems ive come to the right place…lots of interesting discussions/views happening…

one question i have is what should one do to get an apprenticeship at a shapers shop…?? i realize i have to contact one but thought

id might see if anyone had any opinions or tips…thanks

beg…plead…sweep.

Norway?? Do you guys surf there? Right-on!!

I see you are a tatoo artist, which means you are probably quite creative. Put together a portfolio of your work, write down why you want to be a shaper, which I assume will have some noble reasons to it, then do what soulstice says and present yourself.

come to think of it, do like most of us…hang out here for a while, get the knowledge necessary, then grab some foam(or a chunk of ice) and got to it. after you’ve shaped a half dozen or so you’ll have a better idea if it’s really somthin’ ya wanna do and be able to show the shop your skills and desire. Good luck and God speed!

there was an article on Surfline awhile back called “The Great Chase North”…it was about a surf trip starting in Spain and going north through France and up into England, and then across the north sea into Norway. i’m surprised to hear that there’s surf around Oslo, though…isn’t it tucked way back up in there??

thanx aquafiend65…yeah we surf up here…theres some good spots too…pretty cold though…

ive been tattooing for ten years now and do only custom work which means drawing and sort of

shaping the designs from scratch togehter with the client…since i live where i live i dont get to

surf enough and my heart is really hurting (no joke)…and im pretty tired of the cold too…

I’ll bet 9 out of 10 guys who ever shaped 5 boards or more, including the AlMerricks, just started out spending their own money, shaping one after another, until they got it right.

First wrong board works just fine, looks like hell, but it works.

You start using your love of the sport, then you get better and might make some money at it.

You still gotta spend your own money to buy materials.

Nobody in California would hold your hand teaching you, you gotta go for it.

good luck on the boards man, i bet you will have some sick air sprays on your board

thanks for your answers…just thought id let you know i now got my workshed sorted…

super small basement space but ill make it work…damnit…looking forward to start my

first project and its situated were i live so i can work whenever im home…i asked my

girlfriend whom i lived with for along time if i could use the space cuz we only stored stuff

that was going in the flat sooner or later and she said no prob so now im one happy

camper…been checking out a lot of info on this here fantastic site…alot to learn…

will post pictures soon…

Nice one getting the space sorted. Word of warning though, if this space is connected to your house or living space, don’t glass in there, do it outside or in someone else’s garage. The resins are foul and very toxic.

Which route have you decided on, foam or wood? If you haven’t decided yet have a look at Paul Jensen’s site, that should stir something inside you, it did me.

Good luck and keep us posted.

PS It’s cold here too.
